Hey I'm new to this forum so sorry if this has already been posted!
My question is if any of you guys know about tightening the shutter curtains on a canon ae-1?
My problem sort of seems like the second shutter curtain is lagging a bit and creates overexposed streaks on the film.
Just having trouble figuring this out online as the only results that come up is the infamous shutter squeak!
Light seals have been replaced recently too.
Do you intend to do it on your own? Because that's not going to be easy and will probably involve disassembly of substantial part of the camera. I'd suggest looking for "service manual" or "repair manual" first of all. I have never had Canon, but what you described is "shutter curtain desynchronization" and every single Olympus OM-2S suffered from that problem. Since it is an electronic camera, I couldn't do much.
As for Canon, first rule out shutter squeal/squeak. It may indeed be caused by lubrication problem.
One more thing: I would take one picture of the same scene at all shutter speeds, to see if the problem is on all of them, or only on some. Because on OM-2S it was on three speeds only.
I bought mine when they first came out, and have never had any such problem.
I point this out merely because you have to be careful with anecdotal information available on the internet.
A repair manual makes sense.
I was in my late 20s when the OM-2s arrived in 1984 .
Just pointing out that you needed to qualify your "every single OM-2S" with the words "that I have encountered".
By the way, here is my well used OM-2sp (as it was badged in Canada and several other places):
This is NOT an AE1 but the technique is the same.
All you have to do for access is remove the bottom cover. ******I do not recall which is opening or closing curtain.******
