On my Canon 7 at slower shutter speeds I hear an weird "after-sound" -- the click doesn't end cleanly but there's a faint "tick - tick - tick " after the release. I certainly notice it at 1/30 or slower, maybe at 1/60th, but from 1/125 and faster it's not there. Almost like something is bouncing along till it stops. Any ideas on what this might be, and whether it's a worry. Pictures seem to come out fine!

my 7sz has an after sound at 1/15 and 1/30 only. It sounds like of like what you describe.
So do two copies of the canon P at 1/15 and 1/30 only.

I always imagine that that sound is the sound of the clockwork mechanism that times the release of the first and especially the second curtain.

And the prize goes to Trask.
It's the slow speed escapement winding.

Just got a P which does it as well so I am assuming this is normal -- or is something in need of a CLA? And one more question - the rewind crank on my P is a lot stiffer than on my 7. Would it be ok to pull up the crank and put a micro drop of oil there?

As John mentioned the sound is from the slow speed escapement winding. All my mechanical Leicas also do that.
Before oiling anything make sure the rewind release knob is correctly turned all the way to rewind. Maybe it's not all the way there but almost.
I didn't notice anything unusual rewinding with the P, but I did not have a 7 to compare it to.
I do know that some cameras are just smoother to rewind than others. My Minolta CLEs feel like there is no film in there when I rewind them, they are that smooth. While other cameras I have put up much more of an effort.

I am comparing the P with my 7 without film -- feels like the P is binding a touch like some lube dried out. Since the Ps were made in 1959 it's not surprising!
