Hello,
Just picked up a 50 mm Canon f1.4 lens (with the leica threads) and I was looking at the Kitchingman web page on archive.org to see if I had bought one from the first series or the second. The site refers to Type 1 and Type 2. I suspect this lens is in the transition period, since the serial number (29677) is AFTER the highest one registered for the Type 1 lenses (29390), but below that for the Type 2 (31241). The text on the lens, though seems to agree with Type 2, since it reads 'CANON LENS 50mm 1:1.4 No 29677 Canon Camera Co., Inc. LENS MADE IN JAPAN. Seems to be in good shape.
I don't know if anyone is keeping track of this kind of information, but if one assumes the text is what determines Type 1 or 2, there is now a lower serial number corresponding to the Type 2 lenses.
I haven't tried it out yet on film, but it looks and feels nice on the M bodies.
