Cannonet Ql17 Repair Help

Hello everyone,

I was cleaning the viewfinder of my canonet ql17 and I got into a problem of putting my rewind know back. The thread for screw fell inside the camera which means it's stuck down there because I can't open the film door. Look at the picture for reference

Film crank for canonet ql17 issues.

I have the canonet ql17 and I just got it. I shot my first roll and when I went to wind it back into the canister the film crank came unscrewed. I saved the parts that came out but I don’t know how to fix it. My roll of film is still in the camera. I have a picture of what it looks like. How...

Might not work for you as in this situation the film is holding the rewind fork part in place

The problem with this method is that thread for the screw fell into the camera.

The rewind fork fell into the camera I think. There's a rattling sound inside it

Yep… that seems the unfortunate difference between you situation and theirs.

I had the rewind on a Nikon FE come apart while empty. There is a procedure I saw on internet for using a crochet hook to reach in and pull the latch. Despite seeing several videos of that working I couldn’t do it and had to take camera to a repair shop. I fiddled with it for days; they fixed it in less than 5 minutes.

Perhaps there is similar procedure that would work on Canonet?

The method of using a hook, like a crochet hook, to pull up on the latch and free the door does work. It takes some fiddling to figure out exactly what piece you need to hook on and pull up. The Canonet has a pretty narrow hole for the rewind crank, so you may not easily get a crochet hook in there, it will need to be one of the smallest sizes. A bent piece of metal like from a bobby pin might work (are they called bobby pins in the UK? Clips to hold long hair in place.)

This is a pretty common problem, so if you can find a shop that knows about film cameras, as Brian says they can probably fix it quickly. When you get it out, make sure to screw the parts back together tightly. Use something in the slot of the rewind fork to hold it while you tighten the knob.

I’ve used bent paper clips to hook into the latch to open SLR cameras. Not sure if that could work in your case. Good luck
