What's wrong with the negative? It looks fine to me.
(The orange blob looks like a reflection of a light-source when scanning the neg.)

ah, maybe I left the overhead room light on. I usually turn it off. However I turn it on, while putting the next set of frames in the film holder.

it is the first "unproccesed" image posted as taken from the D700 "scanner" lower right corner.

I will have to go pull the negative strip and look through a loupe ...... DOH! posted without thinking of that. Dang it. Getting old is fun.....

Are you saying that orange blob is not some weird lighting effect and is actually on the negative? It sure looks like a reflection on the film from lighting when you photographed the negative.
