So I have durst m301 and just starting printing.. I bought a set of ilford 3x3 below lens filters...can I just trim these and use them in the 70mmx70mm filter drawer above the lens or do I have to buy specific above lens filters... thanks??

No reason you can't. But actually, isn't the 3x3 inch set really made for above the lens? The filters for use below the lens are mounted in holders and there should be some kind of holder in the kit that's attached to the enlarger. I have a couple of these things and never could get it to work conveniently enough for me, so I just went with the above the lens solution until I got a dichro head. Now I don't with them at all.
Are you planning to use these between the negative and the lens? I would not put anything there but air. Even the best quality filters will change the corrections of the lens. Filters to be used above the negative are somewhat less critical than those to be used below the negative, but must be larger than the negative
