Can I ship developer & fixer into the U.S. ?

Hello folks

I've got some new & unopened ID-11 and Ilford Rapid Fix that I'd like to ship to the US from Europe .. but I'm not sure if it's possible.

I've been reading the MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETs for Rapid Fix and ID-11 B and under "TRANSPORT INFORMATION" it says Not classified for air transport. Since they're not flammable I'm guessing they're okay for transport if packed properly?

The liquid developer might be a problem, try calling the airline.

I purchase C41 chems from macodirect which they ship here to Michigan.
The rules seem to be changing, for example see the comment on their larger kit here.

However i recently purchased about 3 by 1 litre containers of other C41 and they arrived .

I would add that the latest package was really battered, almost broken when it arrived, so a sturdy box with the containers in air pillows might be in order.
Any way do some research yourself to see the requirements.

I have traveled on the plane with eco-pro paper developer in my suitcase from the US to Canada. At home, I found a sheet in my suitcase that it had been inspected by US customs/security and the developer was still there. At the Freestyle & B&H websites, neither ID-11 or rapid fix are labelled ground shipping only. So I think that there should be no issue. Are you planning to send it by airmail or take it with you on the plane? It is readily available in the US and you could opt to buy it there and have it delivered to your hotel. Hotels usually don't mind if you have something send there if you let them know in advance. I've done that many times.

Powdered developers, etc. in their original packaging can go in your checked bags in small quantities. I just did the reverse and brought PMK back with me from the States to Europe.

Don't bother shipping with a carrier, especially the liquids. You'll spend more on shipping than buying fresh chemicals in the States.

I spoke to the postal service here. They said if the items are not flammable then they're fine (just label them properly.) We'll see what happens.

no problem with dry powders but liquid chemicals may be an issue or very expensive.

Well, my shipments arrived. I sent a bottle of Rapid Fix, some ID-11 and Diafine. In my suitcases I also brought ID-11. I have relocated to the US and wasn't sure if I could source b&w chems easily; walking into a store and buying them off the shelves. I was in Hunt's the other day and didn't have the Ilford products I'm used to so I'm glad I took them with me!

There are very few places in the States with neighborhood photo stores that carry a full range of chemicals. Mail order is the way to go. Freestyle in LA for the west coast and usually B&H in NY for the east coast. There are others as well. Finding a good source near Boston shouldn't be a problem. Maybe some of your neighbors will chime in with suggestions?

With the demise of Calumet, there's not much of a place to buy chemistry over the counter in the Boston area. To look at Hunt's website, they now have almost nothing in chemistry, they used to have a decent stock in the Melrose store. My last restock was mail order from Adorama, which does incur non-trivial shipping costs. B&H also carries a full line of chemicals, but they will not ship ANY liquids (some deal with UPS).

It's much cheaper to make ID-11 (D-76) from scratch, buying the bulk chemicals from Photographer's Formulary. I can mix D-19, D-23, DK-50, or D-76 from scratch, all from a modest set of raw materials.
You would need a scale, I got a Ohaus JR-300 Ruby Jewelry Scale for $6.50 on eBay, just set it on grams instead of grains. But any 0-300g digital scale should be fine.

Yes, it's a real shame Calumet went under

I was at Hunt's and the man behind the counter said he could order some Ilford Rapid Fix for me if need be. They had a good supply of paper (NE School of Photography is across the street.)

I'm shooting subminiature right now so I'm going through chemicals very slowly.

B&H will ship almost the entire Ilford chemical line. I 've gotten Rapid Fix, DD-X, Microphen, ID-11, Ilfotol, Ilfotec HC, Ilfostop, and Hypam from them for years. Free ground shipping on most orders over $49. Freestyle (an APUG advertiser) will ship just about anything else B&H won't and shipping is reasonable. I used to order from Calumet too, but that's a moot point now.
