It is our understanding that PhotoVision has suspended publication. If you were a PV subscriber and have not tried CA or VC try us. We have a commitment to cover the traditional darkroom in every issue of each magazine. Beginning in the Jan/Feb 04 View Camera Ron Rosenstock will be taking one of his best known photos each issue and dissect it from the original vision in the field to the final execution of the print in the darkrom. We will also be increasing our coverage of the traditional darkoom in issues of CameraArts

This is why I rarely subscribe to photo magazines and never for long subscription periods if I do. I trust View Camera and Lens Work to be around, so I subscribe. I would like to subscribe to B&W (the US mag) and Black and White Photography (UK), but I don't trust them to be around a year from the time I subscribe. So I read the UK mag at Borders but rarely buy it and usually buy B&W but do skip some issues.

However, I am still planning to subscribe to Aggie's effort. I think becuase of the affiliation with APUG and the people invlolved I think it has a better chance at success.

In a related topic, if you have a chance to browse the newest issue of Lens Work #50, it has a very nice article about the evolution and growth of Lens Work. This issue marks the tenth aniversary of the publication.

Hmmm... I cancelled my relatively new two-year subscription after the last issue of PV and returned the article on Photoshop, and I'm still waiting for my refund.

I just cancelled my subscription to the magazine and was told that the powers that be are looking at various business plans and trying to figure out what needs to be done from now on.

Isn't this why they go out of publication? I can't subscribe to View Camera because I am outside the US but have a standing order with Robert White in UK for every issue. Sometimes I get more out of it than others but if nobody buys it then I won't get anything from it. B&W mag (UK) is an excellent publication and in my opinion will stick around for quite a while. Ailsa ( the editor) is also an APUG'er and in my eyes is doing a sterling job.
Its getting harder and harder to get good mags so I try and keep the existing ones alive

I look forward to any quality addition to the Analogue fold and will also subscribe to the mag as well.

Yes, it is a catch-22 for publishers. If I knew going in that I would be reimbursed or have my subscription transfered to another mag of my choice, (not Outdoor Photographer or Pop Photo etc) I would be more comfortable. When I mention View Camera and Lens Work it seems that they have had a pretty steady subscriber base for several years or growing as is the case with Lens Work. I think the APUG related publication if done well will be able to garner a similar following of dedicated subscribers. Another reason i have not ponied up for one of the other mags is that I would rather have the money go to the APUG effort.

View Camera has never missed an issue in 15 years and CameraArts has not missed an issue in 6 years.

We are going to be increasing our coverage of the traditional darkroom in both. Here is a question. Do you want separate darkroom articles or do you want supplements to the portfolios discussing the photographer's darkroom practices?

Steve, can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I think a mixture of both would be great. Some discussion of the darkroom practices of a featured portfolio, then others discussing various darkroom features.

Aggie, not much I can offer other than sign me up when the time comes. Would be happy to sign up now to help get a little $ to start. I have learned to be patient....

I agree that it's best to play it by ear, as it were, with where to put the darkroom stuff. It would be interesting in a magazine like VC to see some darkroom info along with the other technical information for each portfolio, but I could see that co-existing with darkroom technique features or a regular darkroom section.

I'm sorry to hear about PhotoVision going under too, I guess that's why I've been missing the last issue. I guess that's the chance you take when subscribing to anything new. I figure with the free issue that Steve A. sent out before he left, I only got burned for 3 issues.
As far as other magazines go, I have only good things to say about B&W Photography, VC and LensWorks, all are excellent publications. If it wasn't for the exchange rate I would certainly buy more of B&W magazine but the Cdn. dollar just isn't what it once was.

I am always intrigued to hear how pro's manipulate their images in the darkroom and I am also keen to learn about different processes/materials

I used to subscribe to the old Camera & Darkroom magazines both the one from USA and UK. They were both good reads. The former, I am told, was killed off and I received a different magazine in its place, one I was not interested in, while the other one seemed to collapse when the editor moved to France to try to help his wife's medical condition. There is little one can do in these circumstances but it does jolt one's confidence and future willingness to commit to a subscription.

I would enjoy seeing a sidebar with portfolios about technique and process. I remember a portfolio a few years back by Joe Levick (sp) of photos of a marble quarry. With the portfolio was a nice sidebar about his technique and development by inspection. I think one of those with a portfolio per issue, and I see Steve Ancell will be contributing also.

I have also greatly enjoyed the articles on various lens companies. I would like to see more articles such as the one you ran a few issues back about the Eastmen Commercial View 8x10. Maybe a set of articles about the offerings of past camera manufacturers. Follmer & Schwing, Burke and James, Empire, Korona etc. I know many of these companies were combined, or bought by others etc. Maybe some historical background of cameras and companies.

Other magazines that have stumped for subscriptions on apug have offered complimentary free issues to the people who contacted them. I think if you are sincere you could at least do similar to what others have offered. I have learned over the years that there are people who are only in search of free stuff and will never support the source. We have poseted several free articles on our site. If that is not enough of an indication of the quality of our magazines then so be it. For a 25 dollar investment, returnable if you are not satisfied, I think our publications are worth the gamble.
