Camera Stores in Baltimore?

Hi. I'm an Aussie APUG member visiting the US on business. I was planning to drive to W Virginia tomorrow (Saturday) but the weather forecast is not good, so I think I will put that off till Sunday. Getting a bit stir crazy in the hotel so thought I would drive into Baltimore, and if there are any decent camera stores I might check them out for used gear. I've done a search of the archive and I've identified Service Photo in Falls Road as a possibility. Any others?

Agreed, Bmore is a cool city...Edgar Allen Poe lived, worked, and created a few legends in this city. He is buried in Baltimore, neat little graveyard right on the sidewalk!

The Ravens football team can boast of being the only pro team named after a literary character.....and do try the crab cakes! (probably more than you wanted to know!)

Phillips Seafood is a good place for crab cakes...

Also you can wander freely around the revolutionary war era Fort McHenry and take photos, tripods ok, good views of the bay where the British Fleet pinned down the Yankees for a brief and shining moment....national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner " Was written here at that time....some good old fort photo ops here.

For other neat things to see/places to go in Baltimore, there's the Railroad Museum (near the Edgar Allen Poe house), Druid Hill Park, Cylburn Arboretum, the Johns Hopkins University undergraduate campus, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland Institute College of Art's campus (which has an excellent photography program, btw...), Greenmount Cemetery (home to many famous and infamous dead Baltimoreans, including relatives of Napoleon, John Wilkes Booth (the assassin of Abraham Lincoln), Johns Hopkins (founder of the university), and Walter Lord (author of "A Night To Remember" about the sinking of the Titanic).

Not sure yet. Somone recommended the "Skyline Drive" south from Front Royal which I see from my map is actually in Virginia. Grateful for any suggestions.

Although Skyline Drive is very pretty, it is a VERY long drive from DC. Dubious that you can make it there and back again in a day, especially once the leaf-peeping has begun, as traffic on Skyline Drive slows to about 25 mph. Easier to do in a day would be drive out to western Maryland, toward Deep Creek Lake. The entire jaunt is on limited access interstate highways, and you will see some pretty spectacular landscape on the way. If you're so inclined, you can take a reasonable side-trip off the freeway and go visit Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, two Frank Lloyd Wright houses, if you're architecturally inclined. Check with the Fallingwater website for booking your ticket - they may still require them in advance at this time of the year.

Although Skyline Drive is very pretty, it is a VERY long drive from DC.

Actually, it wasn't too bad, especially since an early start helped me beat the traffic (I am actually staying closer to Baltimore than DC). Although the sky was clear when I set off there was thick fog when I got to Shenandoah NP, and I considered aborting. Just as well I didn't, as when the road got high enough the sun came through - mixture of bright sun, blue sky, fog on the lee side of the hills, and of course autumn (fall) colours made for a great day. I gave the G1 quite a workout. Of course there were a few other "leaf peepers" but congestion was not too bad. Although the majority had digitals, I was gratified and slightly surprised to see how many were using film SLRs - typically manual focus.

Just wish I had room in my bags on business trips to bring the Horseman 4x5!

Next time you're here give us some more lead time and we'll take you to better places than Skyline Drive. I'll take the Catoctins to Shenendoah any day.
