Would you say that a sense of environmentalism is a significant part of what drives them, in the sense of wanting to extend the life of things which already exist, rather than consuming so many new ones, with the carbon emissions that inevitably entails?

Thank you @Henning Serger for bringing this to my attention. I had never heard of this project and their webshsop lists a huge selection of nice stuff. I will surely check with them whenever I feel the need for more camera's and lenses.

Yes, their store has a huge amount of offers. And very reasonable prices. And the gear is all checked.
Best part is that you get good and checked stuff from them but I think that prices have gone thru the roof already. The prices have risen in general of course - but checked cameras have their price increased with the same percentage of total price.
