Camera phone question

Hi!

Quick question: Can you set your aperture on most smartphones? I have a droid razr m and it shoots everything at f/2.4. I took a photo the other day and the shutter speed was 1/1667. This is a bit confusing to me, having mostly shot film.

I certainly don't want a 2.8 aperture for landscapes!

I think (Although I have no full knowledge) that they operate on a very basic programme mode so you have no control.

Don't know of any that allow manual control. Don't worry about f2.4 - most use very small imaging chips (much smaller than those in even compact digital cameras) and consequently a very short focal length that provides plenty of depth of field, even wide open, if that is your concern. In any camera it is much easier to implement auto exposure by varying the shutter speed rather than the f stop and that is why the earliest auto SLRs mostly only offered aperture priority. OzJohn

Well, that and Aperture Priority is better

I know the iPhone offers you no control over anything camera related. It's fine for general photography, but I would hardly consider it if the highest image quality is desired.

I prefer that over shutter priority anyway.aperture besides controlling DOF IS A COMPOSITION TOOL MORE SO THAN SHUTTER SPEED. even in manual mode, I select the aperture before measuring for the shutter speed. a phone is a phone and not a camera. I would call '911'with my camera either.oh no; Nikon, don't get any ideas now!

Although there is a number of third party applications that give you greater control over the camera in your phone, like the "Camera +" for iphone, none of them will give you real control over aperture since the lenses used in phones have no iris.
