Camera bag reccomendation

Looking for a bag to carry around for daily use. A sling would be nice, i was looking at the Incase x Ari Macropolous bag, but it wouldnt fit a 15in macbook pro.

The Gear:
  • 5d gripped
  • 27-70
  • 70-200
  • 35L
  • 15 in Macbook pro.
  • Stylus Epic

Style and looks are key, since this is a bag that will be with me wherever i go

Me thinks you need to think about carrying less digital gear. A 5d with three lenses and a Macbook? Get a Medium Format camera and loose the 5d and the macbook.

It ain't rocket science, you take all your gear to a photographic shop and try it in some bags.

Out of curiosity I googled some of the stuff listed above as I have no idea about modern gear. It looks like it'll all weigh around 7.5kg, I'd think twice about carrying all that up my stairs let alone lug it everywhere I go! The Stylus Epic, though, that has potential. It can fit in a pocket, you can have an extra roll of film in the other, perhaps a bit of money in the back pocket and a house key. Leave the iphone at home, along with all the gear and liberate yourself.

Welcome to the Analog Photogaphy Users Group.

There are many choices for your small-format SLR. I think the best option would be to go to a camera store or a military surplus store with your stuff.

Personally, I would be mighty tempted to leave the 28-70 and the laptop at home, as well as the grip. You also might find that a 100 or 135 is better suited to daily use and lugging around than the 70-200. Far lower profile and lower value too. Plus they can be bought in faster versions than the zooms.

But we all make our own gear choices, whether or not they will work for someone else. In the same way, our favorite bags may not be best for you. I really think you need to visit a store that has bags in stock rather than asking on the Internet.

Makes sense if you are a newspaper photographer. I used to carry around more than that: three cameras, five lenses (three fixed: 28, 50, 135, and two zooms: 35-105 and 80-200), a 1.4x TC, one large motor drive, one small motor drive, two potato masher Sunpaks, two speedlite Sunpaks, and in a backpack in my trunk. Had a monopod, a tripod, light stands, and umbrellas in the car too. Used to carry a computer, Coolscan II and processing kit to out-of-town events as well sometimes. When the 1D came out, I started using two bodies instead of three, no more motor drives, and a computer became standard to carry every day.

But for every day personal shooting, I must admit that it sounds like a lot of stuff. But if that is what you have, you use it.

You can use a Billingham 335 or 445 for that stuff, but these bags are big and somewhat heavy.

I have a Billingham 335 and the larger 550 bags and there's no way you could get a 15" laptop in them, these bags came out about thirty years ago before laptops were ever thought of.

An Apple 17" MacBook Pro fits into a 445 perfectly: I travel with it all the time. I believe the bags were redesigned recently with the 'Tuk-Top' and other improvements, including space for a Billingham sleeve for 15" laptops (purchased separately). I use an aftermarket sleeve for the 17" laptop. It fits into the forward, zippered compartment under the main flap.

Think Tank Urban Disguise 50 or 60, whichever holds the laptop. Very well designed, comfortable, with everything accessible, durable, and they look more like ordinary laptop briefcases than camera bags. I have the UD 30 for a smaller kit without laptop and the UD 50 for when I need a laptop and/or more gear.

My wife pointed out to me recently David when I was thinking about buying a Think Tank U.D 50 for street shooting (although I don't own a laptop) "It's more likely these days that you'll get mugged because they think you have laptop than for your old fashioned film gear".

Like a lot of others, if you dont need to carry about all those lenses, you probably shouldn't. But if your work calls for it (if you're a journalistic photographer) I'd definitly go for something from the Lowpro range. When i need to carry about my gripped 5d mkii, I always have two or three lenses I need for whatever I'm doing, plus my speedlite, external drive and laptop, my lowpro sling carries it all comfortably, plus I can still get my bronica (sans grip unfortunately) and rolls and rolls of 120. it's heavy so i rarely have both cams though so weight isnt too bad. lowpro is great

Laptops are so ubiquitous in NYC and relatively cheap these days, and they aren't worth stealing if they are more than six months old, so I don't think they're much of a target. Pilferage of new iPhones and iPads during shipping seems to be more of a growth industry.

I still think that laptops would be a much more saleable item for thieves to re-sell than film cameras these days.

Regarding the comments about digital, it's the same bag, whether you're using a DSLR or film camera, and some of us need to travel with a laptop even when shooting film, because we're also writing, using the internet, sending e-mail, recording expenses, etc. The UD 50 works just as well in my experience with an SLR or DSLR and four primes or my Linhof Tech V 23b and up to 6 lenses. If I'm traveling, I put my laptop in the laptop slot to carry on the plane and put one or two rollfilm backs, empty, in checked luggage, then when I'm settled, I can take my laptop out and use the laptop slot for film.
