Does anyone know what the criteria are for joining the Calotype Society on Facebook?
I've tried twice. The first application I withdrew after it had been 'pending' for weeks. I've tried again - and again it's just 'pending',
During the time I've waited there have been several new members, some of whom, whilst no doubt excellent photographers, seem to have nothing to do with calotypes.
There doesn't seem to be any way to contact any of the administrators - I'm not the world's greatest at social media so I have an almost non-existent online profile.
I haven't been rejected outright - just left hanging.
I've tried alternative processes for over 20 years - I have what must be one of the first (and well-thumbed) copies of Spirits of Salts - ditto Alan Greene and Christopher James, but never felt good enough to post pictures,
It's the lack of contact that's so frustrating.

Just looking at the site, and not being much of a Facebooker myself, I clicked the 'join' button and was invited to make a post immediately, presumably to introduce myself, which I did. As far as I now know, I am now a member of the site, so I'm not sure what is happening whenever you have tried to join???

And after having a quick browse, it seems that it's not that busy a forum at all...:

Try again and if no luck, there is a button inviting me to invite someone else. If you still want to join, PM me your email and I'll try getting you in that way.

Thanks for taking the trouble Terry.
However the link you give is for Flickr, not Facebook which is:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/calotypesociety/about

You have to sign in to Facebook first, then request to join the group. You can sort of browse without joining but posting and so on seems restricted.

You're right about these groups being small though - the Facebook one has been going 9 years and only has about a thousand members.

I've now received a message from Photrio:-
"The alt process groups on Facebook tend to be small and generate little traffic, which is not to say they are unhelpful. I have received good advice from knowledgeable individuals. I suspect the person who set up the site just hasn’t logged on to check for pending applications in a while. You might give it another try."

Well I've given it 2 tries over several weeks and as I said in the OP new members have been accepted into the group whilst my membership application was 'pending' - so someone must be checking the site fairly regularly??

If you have a blank Facebook profile (no profile photo - or a generic one - and an empty friends list), most admins of private groups will not admit you. I'm not saying you have a blank profile (I have no idea), just that is the case if you have one.

Thanks Don, that's useful.
My profile photo is real but I haven't posted much - I'm not into social media online. At almost 72 years old I just want to contact similar-minded people {I'm not looking for anything else - I have a wonderful wife who is very tolerant of my playing with silver nitrate et al.)
I have a vast history of notes of experiments with early processes - mine and others -but getting in contact with 'the others' appears difficult.
I do use digital photography but it's more digital imaging than real light -based photography for me. Rant over.
I guess I'll just plod on as is for now.

Forget Facebook....why don't you post your work or questions here - I'm sure there are some on this forum who will have interest in the topic. Or may be you will inspire others to take it up. I think, in my opinion, this is the best place for a detailed/intelligent discussion on any given topic in alternative processes.

The other choice is https://groups.io/g/altphotolist that has the legacy of the oldest discussion group from way back before social media came into picture.
