After profiling my monitor with the spyder3, i have noticed a significant improvement. i have an however. . .

after printing a grey scaled test target, i cannot discern the two darkest zones and the two lightest zones from each other. The results are clearly apparent on my monitor and in my prints. What can I do to to finely calibrate my monitor profiles.

Monitor: I'm using a LCD TV connect to HDMI Port
Printer: Canon 9500 MK2
Calibration tool: Spyder3 Express

Aside from the fact that we are comparing a transmissive and reflective image are you using a valid ICC paper profile for your printer/inkset?

Apart from what Don Bryant said you should refrain from "finely calibrating" in the sense of tuning monitor profiles; calibration by eye/to taste is much more imprecise than the one calculated with the help of hardware (spyder). If you are not satisfied with the monitor profile just make a new one (or get a different profiling software). You can fine tune printer profiles if the profile making application provide such an option.

So IIUC Your profiled display does show the full grey scale but you un profiled printer does not.

If that is correct then it's not a big surprise really, all aspects of your work flow needs to be profiled not just the monitor. That means either profiling the printer or using the correct paper/ink profile provided by the makers of the ink & paper.

A low cost option for printer profiling is the Profile Prism software or Vuescan. Next up the price range are either the SpyderPrint option or the ColorMunki Photo option.
