H, just read the Caffenol Cookbook & Bible and very keen to get started after having developed my own negatives in HC-110 and Rodinal for years. I've recently moved to Luxembourg and trying to find my way around the shops. Are there any Caffenol users from Luxembourg, France or Germany in this group? If so, could you let me know where you buy your washing soda, vitamin-C, potassium-bromide, etc and what brands? Thanks!

hi Hoshisato, are there more Apug'ers than the two of us in Luxembourg? I doubt.
No, I drink the coffee and develop in Xtol or Prescysol - coffee from Cactus, Prescysol from MonochromePhotography and Xtol from AGPhotography, both UK.
Good luck with the coffee (sure you'll find all the basic ingredients at Cactus, BelleEtoile)
Peter

Cheers, I'll do some more exploring of the Cactus in near-by Bascharage. I've seen lots of photographers in Belval where I work and in Grund, but all carrying DSLRs. Today I got some weird looks with my Pentax 67II today

hi hoshisato

im not in europe but was able to get the ingredients there when i was in france.
the coffee was easy it was found at the large grocery chain marmut ( i think that was the name )
the cheapest i could find was "el gringo" instant coffee, it worked great !
the washing soda and vit c i unfortunately bought at a pharmacy i wasn't able to find them locally .. BUT
i know now you can convert baking soda ( sodium bicarbonate ) to washing soda by purging the moisture out
in an oven. spread it on a cookie sheet and heat for a while at a low temperature.
i can't recommend where to find the vit c. maybe someone locally can suggest where to find it,
i know in some places in europe ( northern europe ) the vit c sometimes has other things mixed into it ...

maybe reinhold's caffenol blog can help direct you too
good luck !
( and have fun  )

Vitamin C (as pure powder) can be bought in Germany at every pharmacist, I guess the same would be true for Benelux.

i bought vit c in france at a pharmacy it cost a king's ransom around 30euro for about 1Kg( i was in a small village near switzerland )
it is inexpensive in germany or luxembourg ? in the states i can get 1lb ( a little less than .5 Kg ) for 8$USD

At german pharmacies it is about 2.50€/100g.
Suvatlar asks for the same quality 22.50€/100g.

I bought my last batch of Ascorbic acid (vit C) off ebay, believe it or not. Very cheap. From a chemical wholesaler in Germany, it is 100% pure. I've used quite a bit already and I've not had to compensate one bit.

If you have problems getting hold of Potassium Bromide (KBr) for your faster films, try out iodide/iodine enriched salt. Though not a topic in the Caffenol Cookbook, several of the authors have tried it out and posted their results on flickr.

Sodium carbonate, you can get from swimming pool suppliers, almost all "PH plus" are Sodium carbonate.

1 1/2 years ago I posted on my blog where to buy affordable Vit-C. This ebay-seller is very friendly and he assured me that he ships worldwide. The seller is still active. Reasonable price and shipping: http://caffenol.blogspot.de/2011/06/vit-c-worldwide-seller.html

Vit-C: many supermarkets in Germany, every pharmacy, 2 - 3 Eur/100g

Washing soda waterfree (brand: Heitmann) I get at the local supermarket in Germany, 1 Eur/500g. Also at the "DM-Markt". In France there is sold a "soude cristeaux" containing 50 % water in supermarkets.

Instant coffee: every Aldi, Lidl, supermarket in Germany. Buy the cheapest. Here 3.60 Eur/200g

Best - Reinhold
