C41 processing

It seems since time immemorial (at least 25 years) I have been processing C41 at 38 degrees C for 3mins 15 seconds in a Jobo rotary processor. I have never had a problem with this.

(I have used over the time Agfa, Tetenal, Fuji and Kodak chemicals with the developing same time)

Why I ask, is my son who has expressed a desire to start using colour neg film but hasn't got a rotary processor, but will be using an old JOBO (minus the motor) (he lives 200 miles away) but the heater still works perfectly. Would the processing times be the same as rotary or longer.

I've done C41 in deep tank, trays, inversion in Patterson and Jobo tanks, as well as rotary processing in my Jobo, all at 3'15", I think your son will be alright.

I always ensure that I invert as soon as possible after filling the tank, with two inversions then a knocking on the table with the tank to dislodge any air from the film surface, then I continue inverting twice every 30 seconds with my last inversion at 3' and emptying starting at 3'05" with a stop bath (my choice here) going in at 3'15", from then on I breathe easier and just bop along.

If he can use vigorous agitation, the times should mimic rotary times. If he has Jobo tanks (or any other leak tight tank), he could get jobo roller set (Jobo 1509) for manual rotation.

The time is the same for tank or rotary processing 3 minutes 15 seconds. I use the Jobo with this time and have never had a problem.

I floated my jobo tank with inversion lid in a water bath and did a poor man's jobo rotation with my fingers. C41 and E6. Be careful with the bleach, burp it a few times, especially at the start.

For new soup the times are identical. I usually run the blix to exhaustion not caring so much about the exact time, but the developer is crucial. My current old chemicals call for 4 minutes of developer.
