Hi all,

This is related to motion pic film but I think here is the best place to get help. I have bought tetenal kits for c41 but they only have with blix. I guess the bleach is the harder recipe on c41 and in fact what I need (due to the small volume of footage and the relatively high prices of bleach BP in labs) would be to formulate the fixer. Is it too hard, I mean, only the c41 fixer? Would anyone have a recipe? Many thanks!

I don't have a recipe, but C-41 fixer is pretty generic. A lot of people use it for b/w film fixing also, because it is cheap and cheerful. This would be the standard C-41 fix, which comes in a liquid concentrate you dilute with water to use. Actually I see no reason you would need special fixers for color materials, as it is still just the silver salts you are removing. Color film is prehardened, so you do not need a fixer with hardener.

Dignan Formula

Here is the Dignan C41 fixer formula that I use:

Water ----------------------- 800 ml
Ammonium Thiosulfate 60% --- 162 ml
EDTA Disodium Salt ----------- 1.25 g
Sodium Bisulfite -------------- 12.4 g
Sodium Hydroxide ------------ 2.4 g
Water to make --------------- 1000 ml
pH --> 6.5

I usually fix for 2.5min @ 38C (when fresh, it clears the film in well under a minute)

Here is one quicker and easier.

Ammonium Hypo 60% 200 ml
Sodium sulfite 10 g
Disodium EDTA 2 g
water to 1 Liter adjust pH with 28% acetic acid to 6.5

Almost the same as above but no bisulfite or hydroxide.
