C/Y to Canon EF mount adapter

Hello,

I want to use the Carl Zeiss Planar T 50mm/1.7 (C/Y) with Canon EOS 30.
1. Why should i pick an Fotodiox or Leitax adapter instead of a cheap one with infinity focus confirmation.
2.I read in the wiki that there are two versions of the Planar (AE and MM) is there a difference on the mount?

I bought a cheap no-name adapter to mount a Nikkor on my Canon and the finish was bad and the fit was terrible. Each time I mounted or dismounted the lens from the adapter it made a grinding nose and removed a little bit more metal from the adapter's soft brass. Problem solved when I paid the stupid tax and bought the proper adapter. I call it the stupid tax whenever I try the cheapest alternative first and then go back and buy the piece of kit I should have bought in the first place.

There is no difference for your purposes between the MM and the AE. The only difference was for later Contax cameras to index the Program mode.

I have a cheap Canon adapter that works fine, but doesn't have focus confirmation. Haven't used it in years though. Just like everything else, you get what you pay for. If I were going to buy one today and had a Canon digital camera I would get a good one with focus confirmation.

I would NOT get a cheap no-name adapter. I had one once for using my Contax lenses on my Canon 5D. The adapter would get stuck on my camera, and at one point bent the focusing screen retaining clip. The last time I tried to use it, I almost couldn't get it off and was afraid I would have to take it in for servicing. Poorly made ones can easily damage your camera or your lens, or both.

One additional point: I happened to get an adapter where the little spring that secures the bayonet was half a millimeter too short plus insufficiently angled and springy (the one that has to be pushed aside ith a small flat screwdriver in order to get the adapter off again (unless if it too short, in which case the lens comes off on its own accord) .

Both the duff one and the good ones were quite cheap. No sign of the dreaded skewed mounting planes (camera side not parallell with the lens side) at least not on my moderate Contax wide angles, so I did not look for a Novoflex. Tried the 18mm also, but it did not clear the mirror of the 5dII, so no opinion on parallelism which is critical with very wide optics.

If you want the best adapter, bar none, it's the Kindai / Cameraquest one. I have one for sale for C/Y->EOS, it's in mint shape. I would let it go for $100. (they are about $200 new). I've used it successfully with several zeiss C/Y lenses, but have since sold those lenses so the adapter is surplus to my needs. Feel free to email/ pm.
