burning man 2006?

anybody going to burning man this year? im starting a bit late, but i am aiming to go. and even after reading about cameras and dust, i am tempted to bring my 4x5. if NOTHING else, i will bring some holgas and some 6x9/6x12 cheapies.
 
I think you are crazy to bring your 4x5, but nothing wrong with being crazy. Curious, are you planning on loading film out there too.

I think it's pretty cool that you going to do it... good luck. When you get back, can you post some pics of the bicycle race.
 
I think you need a permit to take photos at Burning Man. Check their web site out. Just google it. I was looking into it and was under the impression that you had to submit an application for a photo permit?
 
it would be fun to have an APUG encampment. but.. this year, being my first BM event, i am a friend-of-a-friend crashing at another camp. i'm sure photographers will run into each other there.

Well that's good! It sounds like it might be easier than I thought it was. It does cost a bit to get in, right? Do they have day passes or will you go for a couple of days?

I've wanted to go. I love all the cool metal sculptures and the whole idea of participating. That would be an amazing event to photograph.

I was planning to be there, but as I was preparing there was a catastrophy and now I won't make it... you see, I was planning to shave half my hair (on the head, but on my body too) and make a huge tatoo on the shaved half of my body (I cannot disclose the content of the tatoo here, due to APUG's strict anti-pornography regulations) but my tatoo artist gave up on me (he decided to have a sex change and the she left to live with her girlfriend in San Francisco) just in the middle of the job (one month after we started) and now I have some parts of a woman and some parts of two men and a pig (and some other apparatus) painted on my left thigh, my left shoulder and my left testicle. Luckily, he/she hadn't started tatooing my face, so I can still go around dressed up like if nothing had happened.
 

Oh man- too funny!!!! Hey- you'd still fit right in, so not such a catastrophe.

i just received a moskba-5 .. russian 6x9 rangefinder. what a fun camera! i was hoping to get in time for burning man. i plan on taking that and a couple holgas. now all i need (photo-wise) is film. probably lots of delta 100 and fuji something (i dont have much experience with color .. usually shoot nph, not sure what if anything is "better").
 
this 6x9 is a bust. it took a month to get here, was shipped from a country other than what i was told, doesn't match the pictures, and it has a light leak that i cannot track down. i've already burned 6 rolls and a roll of tape trying to find it.

i may break down and bring my pentax 6x7. bringing a good camera is my #2 reason to go at all. bringing the p67 means i can focus, bring home 6x7 images, dont need a separate light meter, and i can use filters.

also.. i remembered the film i've used that i liked, 160nc. reading more about the color neg films, i think i've decided on 160vc. with all the dust and dirt i think the better color will help out.
 
it was awesome. it was like another plane of reality.

i saw a guy out there with a mamiya rb 6x7! another with a rollei tlr.

i was equipped with my beloved pentax 6x7 (which didnt get too dusty) and some holgas. i shot 10 rolls of portra 160vc, i should get it and contact sheets back from the lab on friday. i hope to write about my experiences on my personal blog, but i will surely post some neg scans here on apug to share.

did anybody else here make it out to black rock city?

i have a few more images to post, and plenty to write if i can find the time. the images i'm posting are all shot with my pentax 6x7 on kodak 160vc. negative scans. these are the cleanest and easiest neg scans i've ever done.

unfortunately, the new holga i got was way too unusable. looks like every frame is somehow double exposed and overexposed at that. not sure what happened.

Can't wait to see more photos and writing from your Burning Man adventure. I wrote an email journal with photos for my son's Grade 5 class when I went to China for 3 weeks. I'm not much of a computer geek but the blog format intrigues me.

So, no black and white,eh?

i took a couple holgas with me, loaded up with delta 100. both the cameras had some weird ghosting/blur problem rendering everything i shot super over exposed and worthless. i shot lots of color in my pentax, producing some of the images you saw on my blog. one of them i overcorrected, the floor of the playa isn't actually that dark. that's what doing color gets me.

in any case, going to burning man.. it looks like like the pictures. go search flickr for burning man 2006 and you will see everything my camera saw

next year i may bring a LF camera and a tested-beforehand-holga.
