Bulkloading cinema (ecn-II) film?

Has anyone here tried bulkloading/handrolling cinema film?

I'm thinking about doing so and developing for ra-4 printing.

Will the remjet layer scratch the emulsion above it? How difficult is it to hand roll 120 using pre-used backing paper?

I have 400 feet roll. No problem to re-roll it for bulk loader. Remjet is not scratching surface.

As remjet is designed to, inter alia, make the film more slippery, I wouldn't worry about scratches.
I would be more worried about its effect on the camera if any of it should be dislodged.

Remjet isn’t going to dislodge in the camera, it is bonded to the back of the film securely. A typical 35mm cine camera runs 90 feet per minute at normal speed and there are zero issues with remjet backing causing problems.

I do it all the time.

Remjet can be a little bit of a pain but it's not all that bad. Makes for nice cheap film when my C-41 kit is twice past it's recommended limit.

Its contrast characteristics will likely not match up well to the RA4 paper. I have achieved best results by adding hydrogen peroxide to the RA4 developer, to boost the contrast of the paper.

Actually this is why I'm interested in testing ECN film with RA-4 paper. It seems the newer RA-4 papers have a stronger contrast than those of past days. I am finding them to be a little hard. ECN + RA-4 might match the contrast characteristics of the softer grades of older RA-4 paper. Kind of like a workaround

I think main problem with ECN-2 film is in weird colors. Even with fresh film and in ECN-2 chemicals. I'm talking about D films under daylight in photocametas. T seems to give odd colors no matter what.
Is this correctable in printing?

The colors are not weird at all, if processed in ECN-2. The results will still be flat with "newer" RA4 papers unless you can boost contrast.You can do that by adding H2O2 to the RA4 developer. I have worked with many ECN-2 stocks. The one that had the best contrast match to RA4 paper was Vison3 250D, but even then the paper's contrast had to be boosted.

You can also boost the contrast of the film a bit by double developing: Dev, stop, rinse, ferri+bromide bleach, wash, dev (again), stop, rinse, bleach, fix. (I hope I got that right).

Very interesting, thanks for your response. If you don't mind me asking, which paper stock did you print to and would you mind posting an example?

Another reason I'd like to get into ECN films is to have a readily available, inexpensive stock long term, if C41 disappears after 2019 (possible with Kodak bankruptcy and Fuji exiting the film market). I do plan on developing in a Homebrew CD-3 ECN developer and possibly custom RA-4 w/peroxide if needed.

Was there a problem with temp/developer or blix? I would expect ECN films give consistent results if filtered and processed correctly.

No idea. I just never seen normal colors from ECN-2 as still film, from anyone.
Including pro labs.

Looks like Tungsten film shot unfiltered in daylight to me...

Sure the colors ain't perfect but then again, if I'm developing at home the colors never are...

I have had best results with Ektacolor Edge. You could start with say 3ml/L hydrogen peroxide and maybe go up to 10ml. In my experience, the best matched film contrast-wise was Vision3 250D.
