I use an Epson 4180 scanner for my MF negs, using the factory supplied holder as well as a custom built mf strip holder that I bought online from a guy who makes them. Truth be told, I'm not happy with either of them. I rarely if ever scan more than one neg at a time, and am thinking of trying to build something (likely a 2 piece unit) that will hold the neg flat...maybe using glass? Any hints? Has anyone done something like this? Would I use a more opaque piece of glass on top of the neg? I'm about as handy as three left feet, so the simpler the better

If you use a piece of anti-newton glass you can use the existing holder to keep single frames flat.

You might want to upgrade your scanner too. The 4990 can be found relatively inexpensively if you shop around.

Also find the best height for the film plane will improve scan IQ as well.

A lot of folks are taping a piece of acetate to the glass and using Kami or other mounting fluid to wet mount. Sharpest results I have seen come from doing this right on the glass.
