BTZS is a method of film and paper exposure and development that today has evolved to a wide range of applications, from the apps available on cell phones to small hand held devices and notepads. It takes the testing of film and paper into a controlled environment and uses sensitometry to produce a personalized set of reliable working information that can be used in the field to first get accurate film exposure data and second accurate development data. This testing algorithm yields a very significant time saving for both film and paper. But beyond that, BTZS will allow one to accurately match both film and paper exposure and development to determine exactly what shifts in gradation one will encounter before exposing a single sheet of paper.

Normally one would treat film and paper tests separately, but in BTZS one learns to integrate and interpret the testing procedures by first testing the paper to determine its contrast characteristics and then tailoring the film test data to match that paper.

This is extremely important in platinum printing for example, where materials are expensive.
In addition, while it is generally understood that pyro development produces a stain on the film that confounds many empirical testing procedures, BTZS easily handles the sensitometric interpretation of the readings through different filters.

The workshop is a five day session which first begins on Day 1 with a thorough grounding in sensitometry which takes a full day.

Day 2 involves paper tests and paper curve analysis procedures which allow you to test for things which may be important to you such as Paper Contrast Grade, Best Paper Developer, Optimum Paper developing Time, Optimum Dilution and Temperature, Split Development and Water/ Bath Techniques, Split Filtration, Optimum Fixing Time, How to Flash paper, and Toning. Here we will also apply these techniques to platinum printing.

Day 3 involves film testing and extracting working information from film-development curves and is really concerned with only two questions: how to expose the film and how to develop it. The test strips are read on a densitometer and the results plotted which ultimately leads you to determine the development time for your film in your developer and paper combination for any subject luminescence condition. You will obtain real and practical film development and exposure information which will allow you to make scientifically sound decisions for evaluating : best film and best developer; effective film speed; optimum developer dilution; optimum development temperature; intensification; compensating development; reciprocity compensation. On this day we will also explore how to correctly use and evaluate pyro developers and compare the results to conventional developers.

Day 4 involves putting the two together by using the BTZS Matching Program. This allows one to accurately match the film curves to the paper curves to produce the gradation effect one is hoping to achieve, and to determine in advance of any printing session if the print is going to look "flat" or "contrasty" and how to correctly navigate between the two.

Day 5 is a field trip which allows one to put into practice what one has learned in terms of film exposure, and then develop the film according to the personalized test results. Prints will then be made on the paper according to the paper development data for a given filtration.
