I've heard of this mentioned a few times lately and was wondering what it entailed. Is there a procedure for it somewhere that I can read? What are the advantages of it over other methods? Thanks for any information you can offer! :smile:

What I know about brush development I learned from Jorge. It entails developing one sheet of film at a time which with 8X10 and 12X20 for me is not a problem. The advantages are far less damaged sheets of film...as in none. Additionally the film is developed far more evenly then tray development. The single sheet of film is placed emulsion side up in the developer and the surface is " painted with the brush". The brush used is a Hake brush and I continually "paint" the sheet back and forth and then I switch the direction by 90 degrees on the next pass. I find that the densities and times are very comparable to the Jobo times published by Clay Harmon and Sandy King. I believe that the times are probably somewhat shorter then conventional "interleaving" tray development.

If you do a search, you should be able to turn up a long thread on this with Jorge's instructions from way back in the early days of apug.org (i.e., some 8 or 9 months ago or thereabouts).

Thanks for the info! I couldn't find Jorge's instructions here (as I got about 20 pages of search results), but I did find his instructions elsewhere. I think I'll try his technique with my 5x7 negatives in conjuction with DBI. Hopefully all will go well, as I'll be trying both for the first time...

Where can I find your instructions for brush develoment? I am doing an article on Pyrocat and would like to include the rudiments of this type of development as one of the recommended proceduresl.

I thik I've posted that before...
But I used to develop large (50x60cm) prints using paint rollers.
Very similar to brush dev!
