He gets some great photos with that technique. I admire him for getting in the middle of it & working like that. Man, there's some weird looking people in New York.

Recently I was standing on the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, waiting for a friend and taking a few pictures. After standing there for a few minutes, Bruce Gilden strode by, toting a beautiful Leica and a very nice flash unit. He didn't take any pictures, just walked on by. Maybe five minutes later, a young guy walked over to the corner with a Leica and a flash unit and started blasting people. They tended to be kind of shocked / horrified by his actions, and I wanted to explain to them how funny it all was, but I didn't think they'd appreciate it.

Gilden teaches workshops. He just did one in Toronto. The one person I know to have attended the workshop proceeded to use a Gilden-style technique. In fact, you might have accidentally seen a workshop

I seen this a few weeks ago as well. A pretty good technique if you have the guts to do it. By the time you've taken the photo, given them time to realise what just happened, the distance between you and them is probably great enough for people just to keep on walking. I try street photography but i don't think i could use that technique, could probably try it once of twice but i definitely couldn't make it my only way. I admire his technique and his photos are great.

These street photography guys that are getting on a bit in life now seem mega fit and sharp minded. I think it's a very challenging (physically & mentally) field of photography to do, and very rewarding.
