Brown or Blue Glass Bottles.

Sometimes it is recommended to keep a chemical in a dark bottle.

Which gives the greater protection, brown or blue glass bottles?

I usually use brown as they are cheaper, but the supplier put a couple of blue ones in the order as samples.
 
Brown is better for blocking UV light.
 
I prefer colorless/clear, regardless. For things like developing agents, a clear bottle inside a dark cabinet is exactly as effective as a brown or blue bottle in a cabinet.
 
I have both clear and brown jugs, as they are kept in a cabinet I don't worry about the color. In the Air Force we used brown bottles and jugs, these were kept on a shelf but indoors with room light, and we used a lot of chemistry, D76 and DK 50, a gallon a week, so I don't know if the color made a difference.
 
Aren't Blue bottles usually used for poison in all the best Agatha Christie sort of murders? I'd always be wary of such a colour because of its associations

One of the arguments for brown bottles is that they are used in large quantities for other products in the marketplace, so availability and price are excellent. I don't believe the same applies for blue.
My preference is clear, as I store things in a cupboard, but am happy with brown growlers - I like the finger hold!
 
I use clear and brown. Doing it over I think I would use mostly clear. Everything is in my darkroom, so mostly dark no uv.

Glass poison bottles usually had a ridges moulded into them. It was so that people with poor vision would know if they had the wrong bottle.
When methylated spirits was sold in glass bottles the back was usually completely covered in ridges.
Nowadays they put a raised warning triangle sticky label on medicine bottles for the visually impaired.

Good point and useful to any murderers with poor vision, otherwise they might feed the victim with Gaviscon - good only for indigestion.

Will brown construction paper sleeves placed over a clear (for example) Mason bottle act to block uv light?

I know there are effective brown spray paints for plastics, from Kylon(sp?), but will these also block uv light.

I've used heavy plastic Ragu bottles with plastic lids, they are the most drop proof plastics, outside Nalgine lab warehouse that I've seen and and I feel, are a good choice for a darkroom on the cheap.

Curtains are pretty good light proofing for darkroom, but I've had pretty weird darkroom over the years and the low cost of recycling can be the difference in having a darkroom or not so weird alternatives can be the difference in having a darkroom or no.
