Hi there! I recently just acquired a bronica sq and its having a problem. Loaded a roll into the back and attached it to the camera. Then when I went to wind on the first frame, it wasn't engaging. The only way I can describe it is that its "free winding" Gets to wanting to cock the shutter but keeps on winding. Any ideas on how to fix? Cheers

The SQ, with the speed grip mounted, does two cranks of the 35mm SLR-like winder
  • wind 1 = lower mirror, cock shutter
  • wind 2 = advance film to next frame
Usually, after wind 2, and the film is on the next frame, the interlock pin in the back protrudes into the body, activating the interlock whick permits the shutter button to fire.
When the multi-exposure level is actuated, the same sequence occurs but no film is advanced.

From your description, I can only guess that perhaps you loaded the film in a manner which does not actuate the film-advanced mechanism so the counter goes to the next number and the interlock pin does not protrude into the body. If you remove the dark slide with the back off the body, you should see EMULSION...if you loaded the film magazine wrong, you will see the backing paper.

Hi Wiltw, thanks for the reply!
The film is loaded the correct way! and the interlock pin is making contact (i assume as I turn the side mount crank, the rewind crank on the back turns) Any other ideas? It's starting to irritate me

Upon further inspection, i've just found this pin to not be straight. I don't think its making proper contact. Is this the interlock pin?

I cannot say with certainty, as I do not own SQ (I own ETRSi bodies), but I would make an educated guess that the illustrated pin is the film-advanced interlock (same side as the film advance gear).

You need to try a different back, to eliminate the possibility of a misadjustment within the body...same behavior = need to adjust body; different behavior (than your back) = neet to adjust your back.
If sending somewhere for repair, you need to send both body and back so that adjustment can be verified. I had to send both body and back to GMI Photographic (Bronica distributor before Tamron purchased Bronica) to adjust a used back which I had purchased and which intermittently malfunctioned.

Check to make sure you are in single frame mode and not multiple exposure mode.

I inadvertently loaded a roll backwards once, the camera still functioned the way it should, stopping for every frame.

G'day there. Had it in single shot mode the whole time. Loaded the other back with a roll the same way and had no issues. I think the back might be toast

A shame you lost a back, maybe it can be repaired, at least you have it figured out and can move on.
