Bronica Lens Question

I just received a 40mm Bronica SQ lens as a gift and it has a built in hood and it uses 95mm filters. I can't afford a IR filter of that size or most other filters for that matter. What are my options? I had posted a thread in the WTB section and then I saw on B&H exactly how expensive these filters are. I've closed the thread and am looking for other options. Will a Cokin filter work with the lens-hood and which series would be the best option?

The lens is in excellent condition and I would like to keep it but if there is no real option other than a 95mm filter then I will sell the lens.

In theory, you could hold a square filter over the lens if one is big enough.

Looks like the Cokin Z series are big enough.

4x4" is a standard size (100mm sq), especially for motion picture cameras. I imagine you could find an adapter ring on eBay (like for a clamp on matte box for a 16mm camera), or just tape it in front of the lens. Used 4x4 filters are easy to find and usually cheap for color film, harder for B&W.

I see 95mm infrared filters with the usual 720nm cut-off for about $55ea on eBay. The filters are from China and I've used similar with fine results.

Gotta be an S, if it has the built-in hood. I don't know if there was ever a 40mm S with an 82mm thread- I have only seen them with a 95mm thread, same as the PS.

I was wondering about those. If they were a cheap fake or if they really do work.

Yes the lens is the S model and it is 95mm. Just checked it.

That is a very nice lens Don't sell it.

I have a 50mm for my Bronica GS, I found the best filters Quality+Price are Nikon ones, Keep a eye on Ebay and KEH you should be able to
find them for around $50.00 Used, they are out of production but there may be some old stock around too.

Not sure about IR filter, but you should be able to find 95mm UV and C.PL. at decent prices, less than $20 sometimes. Search for Vivitar 95mm.

Several Bronica lenses use 95mm, including S/PS 40mm, PG 50mm, PE 100-220 zoom and possibly more.

The S 40mm does not have a hood, but flanges. And the PS 40mm does not have hood or flanges.

You may be able to find the 100mm square filters. Behind the camera filter is out.

Thanks for the correction. What is the point of the flanges? This is the only lens I've had that has them.

The flanges function as a hood- to block extraneous light. They constitute a fixed "petal" hood.

In my experience with the 50mm PS, there is very little tolerance for fittings extending forward from the lens, so I would assume the 40 mm is really touchy and has to go with a very minimal hood; probably almost zero tolerance at the corners.

I use 680nm and 720nm in a couple of different sizes and they work just fine.

One idea you could try - If you can find a gel large enough, fix it across the film back where it mates to the body.

OKay...

First... Don't sell this lens!

Second... Filters are tricky.. buy a 50mm if you need filter options

Third... this may be sacrilege here, but i often use the "hood" to set my camera down ... lens facing down, on a table, concrete, whatever. This is when I have the grip attached...
