On a recent visit to the National Portrait Gallery in London to see the Schweppes Prize exhibition (well worth checking out), apart from the exhibition I saw some other portraits which were titled as being printed on 'bromide' paper? I really liked the look of the print (sorry, I can't remember the photographer right now) and the paper used.

Is 'bromide' paper different from chlorobromide paper, or just gallery-speak? What bromide papers are commercially available?

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same product. But Bromide paper I use is made and available from Kentmere in UK. I personally use Bromide in grades 2, 3 and also Fineprint VC. This paper is just gorgeous. I highly recommend it.

Bromide papers are different from the more common chlorobromide papers in that they are colder in tone and are less responsive to toners in terms of colour change (will still intensify in selenium etc). As mentioned Kentmere do a bromide as do Forte (bromofort) and Oriental (seagul G). These are graded. However, if you want cool tones with VC, there is Oriental Seagul VC (neutral to cold) Forte polygrade (cold) and Kodak polymax fine art (neutral/cold) to name but a few. In my dabblings the graded papers look little different to cool VC papers ie polygrade and bromofort from teh same manufacturer look basically the same, tho polygrade is very responsive to toners.
