I think that Minor White was very good, but that Weston and Strand are over-rated.
I'll take Brett Weston over his dad any day.

Captain or Tenile?

Thank you Lee.

I asked you to elaborate as Siskind and Brett Weston are like chalk & cheese, and wondered why you chose Siskind. I have to admit to only seeing a small amount of Siskind's worl in publications but I can understand why Siskind.

I like them both. As Lee pointed out Siskind was a major contributor to the modern art movement in New York in the 50s. His work was often displayed along side De Kooning, Kline, Motherwell and other abstract expressionists. He was also personal friends with these artists and worked to add his voice to modern expression. I have seen his work at the Art Institute of Chicago and it only confirmed in my mind Siskind's ability to transcend the medium. That is the ability to make the viewer completely lose himself in the image and forget it is a photograph.

I consider Brett one of the ten greatest photographers of all times. IMHO his image, Garapata Beach is one of the most perfect photographs ever made.

I agree with Jim...while both Siskind and Weston were great photographers, I think that Brett Weston had a greater natural talent of recognizing and depicting the interplay of forms and tonal scale. Yes, Garapata Beach absolutely speaks to me at a subliminal level.

Hmm, I must have misunderstood the question. Aarron was no slouch, I've loved prints of his that I've seen in person. but Edward Weston was by far my favorite photographer--until I rediscovered Brett years after the first time. The first time I just compared him to Edward and found him lacking, probably just because of the difference in style and I was absorbed with EW at the time. Now, Brett is my favorite of the 2, and all the rest that ever lived. Of course Brett had a much longer healthy yworking life than EW too, no telling what E would have produced had he not become ill.

Unfortunately, it lacks color, then it would be perfect.
