Actually, if you read Drew's post, you'll see it has nothing to do with being PC - it is the distinction between someone who keeps a fire burning and someone who puts fires out.

You know, we're all being a bit hard on Andy. Colloquially, one often does hear references to a male firefighter as a "fireman".

But it is interesting to note that in two separate articles in todays NY Times where the occupation was mentioned - they did use the term "firefighter" including once within a quotation of an interviewee. That latter example is in the second article below which is not directly about firefighters!

I didn't stop reading the thread. I have been checking in and reading all the firemen stuff. I should have known not to use the word firemen. My boyfriend used to be one (firemen,firefighter) many years ago. He is retired now...but he still keeps track of all the fires around here.

Maine is one of my favorites places to photograph. In 3 weeks I will be heading out for Monhegan Island for a few days. It's on the primitiave side, but what a beautiful place to go with a camera or paintbrush.

I'm not - although I've had the compulsory training for it. I'm an "engineer" of sorts, working in the North Sea oilfields. For a couple of months more at least, then I'll be a geologist of sorts working in the North Sea oilfields.

When I left school, my first job was with a company which built data logging equipment to monitor cathodic protection of oil rig structures. This was quite interesting work but unfortunately, I never got to visit an oil rig to fit our equipment.

What do you mean by an "engineer" of sorts?

My official job title is "Senior MWD Engineer". But that doesn't mean I'm an engineer - just that it's difficult to think up a suitable job title, and that "engineer" can mean just about anything in English. Unlike in Norwegian, where only people with technical education can call themselves "ingeniør". Since my education was scientific and not technical, I'm not an engineer.

Not entirely correct Ole. Anyone in Norway can call themselves an engineer (Ingeniør) as that is not a protected title. The title "Sivilingeniør" (Master degree in Technology) is protected by some law and you have to have the proper credentials to use it. The best part is when someone translates "Sivilingeniør" directly to Civil Engineer when their degree is in something else, like computers, physics or chemistry.

Hi. I know lemminster quite well. Sterling is another old stomping ground from the mid 80s. Apple orchards and old factories.

Went to NESOP in Kenmore Square. A great working photography school, have no idea what they are like these days. roteague... northern california... never gets hot. Lived in Medford and New Bedford.

Anyhow, welcome. And what is with this camera in shop? You need a second camera. or 42nd.
