Can you translate "boudoir" or clarify please because in English (both British & American) that means "A lady's bedroom or private sitting*room" or are you meaning just tasteful glamour/nudes in an indoors setting.

Boudoir photography is not a term used outside the America.

Oh, sorry Ian, apparently an "Americanism"

It means tasteful intimate photography of women, a bit different than glamour, usually commissioned by a woman for a husband or boyfriend. Sometimes nude, sometimes not, however almost always focused on intimacy and sexuality in an elegant way. Usually set in a bedroom or bath, but also about the house, depending on the style wanted.

It's becoming increasingly popular over here, too. The only reason I know that is because I wrote a feature about it for Professional Photographer last year! There are two or three studios in the UK that specialise only in boudoir photography and are making good livings from it. A lot of it is unspeakably naff, but there are some photographers who are making some rather nice work in the genre.

I've done one such sitting... a bride couldn't afford me to photograph her wedding, and I suggested some pictures as a wedding gift, you know... tastefully nude, and she went for it. She was quite beautiful without any clothes on, and it was fun to do... did it in my studio so she could keep it a secret. Simple light, simple background... just beautiful skin, mostly, in the the pix.


I have wondered how to promote something like that... I have a website with lots of children, so I was thinking it would have to be a separate website, but word of mouth works well for any sort of personal photography jobs. And the intimate nature of the shoot... I don't know, I didn't want to ask her to sign a release, and plaster her pictures all over the web. I think discretion at times, can be a good thing.

Though there are plenty of exhibitionists out there!

I've seen a few shops in New York that specialize in the seemingly surprising combination of women's lingerie and children's clothing, but I guess there is an obvious connection there, so maybe it might not be so far fetched combine boudoir and children's photography in the same business.

I have see children's photographers who market by displaying photos with a business card in children's bookstores, play centers, places that offer classes and groups for new parents and such. Tasteful boudoir photos in the local lingerie shop--maybe promos with models and releases to avoid privacy issues--might be an approach.

I don't market boudoir or nude photography as such, but I do market prenatal portraits, which may be shot in various stages of undress. I have a business card with a sample image and I have it on my website, but I get most of my referrals from word of mouth. I also had a brochure when I had my studio, but after I closed it I haven't had it reprinted.

i suppose it's called ' makeover' photography in Aus....funny, a couple of my friends (separately) paid up for a complete makeover sitting, glamour settings, makeup artist, sexy lingerie, the works.....and i reckon they might just have done it for themselves....bit like treating themselves to a session at a health farm or rejuvenation salon....so i'd guess you'd advertise in the same places in the classifieds, directories and such....depends on how big your budget is

it was a real fad a few years ago and, these days, thankfully seems well past its use by date.
