I guess he didn't have or didn't buy the hot shoe adapter...

The gallery article also states he shot at "f8.5". I think it should be f5.6.

I think even f/3,5 as this was the widest opening on his (most probably) Nikon Nikkor-H Auto 28mm lens.

What a great picture. The man apparently had a great eye for intuitive on-the-fly composition. This photograph has the structure of a well thought out painting. A very dramatic picture with real punch!
