Bolex Paillard and other cine-cameras...

Hi all,

continuing with my passion for analog equipments and photography, I discover on a old-things-market some fascinating-me movie cameras:

Bolex Paillard.

On the specific was D8LA model.
Magnific example of solid build and nice design.
So... some simple questions:

1. Is still possible to find 8mm films on the market?
2. Is possible to develop those films by myself? (I have a b&w darkroom)
3. Which is the better model to search for?
4. Which are other contructors to be considered and which models?

Please, reply also to some of the questions, it seems to be a fantastic world to discover the cine one.....

Foma still produces DS8mm film some companies offer respooled film: http://www.wittner-kinotechnik.de/katalog/04_filmm/d8_filmm.php
You can develop the B/W and e6 film at home with the right chemistry, there used to be a spool/tank made for developing 8mm film at home.
Bolex is quiet good but you pay a premium, the Eumig C3 is just as good at a lower price. The Pathé DS8/BTL Double Super 8 is another good choice. 8mm cameras usually have better registration than their Super 8 cousins unfortunately 8mm isn't as available as Super8.

there are still a few places to get film,
i've never processed it myself, but there are kits to that as well ..
i always sent mine out ...

prep film in michigan ( usa ) sells double run 8mm
( if that bolex is like mine you run it through the camera,
take the spool out and run it through a second time )

You don't want to use DS8 (Double Super 8) in that Bolex D8L. It takes Regular 8. I don't think Bolex ever made a double super 8 camera but there are aftermarket conversions of H8 Rex cameras out there.

I have a Bolex Paillard 8mm camera and projector that purrs like a pussycat. Fantastic machines and yes you can still buy 8mm cine film in both black & white and colour (although I think the colour has to be processed in Canada). I have not used mine for some years as it is only an aid to still photography projects, but now you have got me thinking. What beautiful machines.

IC Racer Foma produces both DS8 and Double 8mm the film the Bolex uses, the Eumig C3 uses the same film. the only DS8 camera I've mentioned was the Pathé. The link I've provided was to Wittner Cinetec and they sell both 8mm and DS(uper)8.
