There are a couple of us here... I talked to JonW, who is here, over the weekend. You might want to drop in at Boise Photo & Darkroom Supply (on Fairview & Milwaukie) & meet the owner Tom Cooper- he's working hard at keeping the traditional light burning.

I know of a couple other people here who are not only interested in traditional photography, but also exploring some of the alternative processes. Give me a holler sometime & we can work at meeting up.

The Boise Camera Club looks to be fairly active. I haven't attended yet (living in Seattle) but I hope to.

I'll be in Boise the weekend of Feb. 18 finalizing the job offer. If it happens, its just a matter of selling our home is Seattle. Plus I have to find a home to buy in Boise that will fit my darkroom and woodworking shop.

Sounds like it's about time to start a Boise APUG chapter!

A couple of us are trying to get a traditional/analog-based group started here... There is the Idaho Photographic Workshop & the Boise Camera Club, but neither are analog-specific. We've talked about shooting trips, workshops, etc.

I think that if enough interest could be generated we could convince a couple of the people who travel with their workshops to come to Boise... My wife works for a software company, they are basically "virtual", and she gives training for their partners. She found that the travel costs to Boise are affordable enough to make Boise a training center for her company. I'm sure we could bring a couple of people here.

The Boise area is thick with image makers, even some holdouts doing traditional photographic work and at least one local supplier dedicated to traditional process. There is even still a lab running E-6 color film. You can check out Idaho Photographic Workshop online at www.idahophotographicworkshop.org. In the interest of full disclosure, I am the current president. It is an organization with some very talented people with really diverse skills that are really just is interested in celebrating personal vision and looking for ways to get the work out where the public can see it. I'll be bringing my Wing-Lynch processor with me (when I move). It does E-6 and C-41 to 11x14 size. I also have a NuArc unit for doing alt stuff. We'll have to get a group going once I get over there.

Boise

My work partner and I both live in Boise. We both shoot 35mm,2 1/4 and large formats. We both have small dark rms and are both are usually broke. We work for the City. Can't say that Boise it self has much to photograph. A few old buildings but not many. Now go north a little ways and it's a whole new world. Also diddo on Tom Cooper. He and his wife are really nice pepole. They love to talk shop.

I posted this thread not knowing what kind of response I would get. I'm really glad to have found other traditional photographers in Boise, as I had thought that most people here had converted to digital.

I do know Tom Cooper of Boise Photo and Darkroom, he's helped me on multiple occasions. He and his wife are running a very professional and personable shop, and their darkroom is great to rent.

I've never looked into the Boise Camera Club, but I have heard that's it's pretty active. I guess I figured it would be full of digital photographers, so I didn't give it a second thought. I'll have to look back into that now.

I think it'd be a great idea to start a traditional-specific group here, as it seems we've got about 10 or so people who would be interested in having one. We could start an APUG chapter, but I'm thinking I could even put together a small group website with contact information, areas of study/work, and a bit of a portfolio for each user in our area. Tell me your ideas on this. I've got webspace (I run a photoblog) and a good hand for code and design, so it would be pretty easy to do. I think a sort of online reference for traditional photographers in the Boise area would be a useful tool.

Sharon and I will be visiting Boise next weekend to nail down the employment contract and start looking for a house. I need lots of room for a good darkroom and my woodworking shop. Anyone in Boise that wants to meetup for dinner, coffee or drinks while we are there PM me.

Steve, although I'm not sure I can join you next weekend, I can suggest a few places to eat if you're in downtown Boise. Delicious Pitas can be had at the Pita Pit, tho this is a bit of a lunch venue. There is no seating, so you grab food and walk and eat. It's really good tho. Next door to the Pita Pit (literally) there is a resturant called Square, they make really good crepes. More formal would be Gino's (Italian food...), or the Melting Pot (fondue). For Pizza, hit Guido's. Coffee, the Flying M. Drinks? Lots of little places on 8th street.

Been working too much and did not see this thread start. Ran into John Moore at Boise Photography & Darkroom on the way home tonite and he pointed it out to me. Yes, Tom Cooper, has the best full service photo shop!

I live in Boise and an APUG local sounds great. Jay DeFehr and I are working to get small "studio" setup for using at the very least during the cold and rainy days. Have continuous studio lighting. Also with Jay's skilled help, we are in the process of setting up a darkroom with a 4x5 enlarger, CPA2 (Jay, I just picked up the 3005 and 3010 Jobo tanks so doing the 4x5 thru 8x10 will be easier, they should arrive next week) and possibly more.

BTW, finally after almost 30 years, I developed 8 4x5 negatives. The first 4 were just trial ballons developed in D76 w/ a Combi Tank. The most recent 4 look nice. I will try to scan or perhaps Jay will help me w/ printing some AZO contacts.

I would do anything for access to stuido lighting. I've been trying to shoot studio-type things at home, but I don't have a monolight yet.

I have a 3 strobe setup with umbrellas, soft boxes and lots of backgrounds that I hope to have room to setup and leave up in whatever house we find.

Darkroom-wise I have a Beseler 45 with ZBE Computerized Cold Light head and a Minolta 45A colorhead, a Wing-Lynch Processor, a NuArc UV unit with vacuum frame, EG&G Sensitometer, GAM color densitometer, and X-rite 861-T UV densitometer plus misc other goodies. If I have the room I'll pickup a color print processor.

So once I get there we'll have to have a big darkroom and studio party!

Count me in. I have a few loose ends to tie up here in CO then it's off to bigfoot country. I'm planning to either apply to the master's program at BSU or teach there or both. I'm interested in getting some alt process stuff going in Boise.

Boise Darkroom Supply

Wooooo...I just got back from heaven. Went to Boise Darkroom Supply and talked to Tom today. First time I've been there. It's too cool! Came home with a cool enlarger scope, Xtol and a bunch of other chemicals, but left a few thoudand $$$ worth of dreams there. John Moore called while I was there...Tom was surrounded by APUGers
