Do you mean a lens with a lens hood? for example like these;

Hoods or filters aren't essential for rendering clouds, but either can be helpful, especially filters. For B&W photos a red or yellow filter will darken the blue sky some, making clouds stand out more. For color, polarizing filters can do the same, and can also be used with B&W.
Hoods block extraneous light, which can affect the image contrast, which might improve the cloud rendering depending on where the sun is in relation to how the lens is pointed.

Any hue in the reflection on a lens means that this part of the spectrum is reflected, but it does NOT mean that all of this part of the spectrum is reflected.
Or with other words: that tiny fraction that is reflected may have a strong hue, but still is only a tiny fraction.


A typical yellow filter has a steep absorbtion curve, and the blue part that falls beyond it is damped by log1 and even beyond log3 thus is below 1/10 to less than 1/1000.

If a blueish surface artefact should have similar effect, then in looking through that lens from behind should give you the same impression as a standard yellow filter. I do not know of such artefact.

Helpful people on the forum have explained to me that bloom is oxidation on older non coated lenses that having been noticed led to lenses being coated to enhance contrast among other attributes.

It won't do much for skies and clouds.

Uh.... do you mean color or B&W film? Huge difference in issues.

Bloom won't make much difference at all. It might as a general rule cause a slight bump in contrast- slight- and handle the kind of glowing light a cloud can give a touch better, but these will be subtle to put it mildly.

Use your regular filters to get regular results.
