Big Lense (760) ?

I obtained an Apo Nikkor f/11 760 mm at a thrift store....am having mounted in a toyo board.
Does anyone have any info on this lense....is it 1:1 only?

Thrift stores? I never have that luck.

If it's like the smaller lenses [and I think it is] no problem at infinity. Figure close to 50 degrees of coverage at infinity.

How do they compare optically and coverage wise with the nikkor m lenses?

I don't have any M lenses to compare. So others will have to but if these are the slower lenses [F/9?] Then both types are I think Tessar designs. Coverage is similar. To the best of my knowledge the process lenses when new sold for much more then any LF lens. They should have been well made for the price. Or at least I figure.

for a little bit of information on this lens. It's part of the same APO Nikkor line that includes many fine lenses. My 480mm APO Nikkor is by far my favorite lens for 8x10. Negatives so sharp it feels like they'll cut your eyes. Fantastic performance from close-up to infinity. I mounted mine in front of an old Packard shutter.

Although optimized for 1:1, the APO Nikkors are very sharp at all distances it seems. I have the 610mm/f9 also mounted on a large Toyo board, but barely have enough bellows on the Toyo G to use it. Here's the side view focused at about 40 feet. Still looking for a Packard shutter to use with it. Or, a good #5 Ilex and about another $500 for S.K.Grimes to mount it (new barrel machined).

Your 760mm will be a whopper.

I use one on an 8x20 and 11x14. It is a superb lens and one of my favorites. It gives sparkling detail and good contrast and weighs a ton.

I use both the 610 and the 760 on a B&J 8x10, like everybody said, razor sharp!. I took the big ring to adjust the apreture off, and use a small plastic peg to adjust with a tape f stop scale, cuts down on weight and bulk. If you get a 610 as well, they both fit on the same flange, so one less lens board to carry. Nice find!

I use the little brother, the 305mm f/9 APO Nikkor, on my Toyo D45M. The lens is a great performer. The design of the APO Nikkors is similar to the Goerz Artar, but the Nikkors have modern coatings. Even though they are technically corrected for 1:1, they're still killer lenses out at infinity.

Thanks for the quick info....this forum has been so helpful to me.....the images of the lenses are great.....on Mongo's reply are the specs for the lens and a great photo of the lens used with a sinar shutter (I am going to have to look in to that!) You all are right the lens is a big one. I think I could scare small children with it.

Be careful...you could hurt small children with it. Or large children. Or bears!

I wanted to, but gave up the idea once I realized I didn't have as much bellows draw with the Toyo 810G as I thought I had.

I imagine that it would make a fine porthole for a luxury liner as well. Just what kind of "thrift store" carries exotic optical equipment? All I ever find is old army fatigues and broken formica kitchen tables...
