oh--by the way--the thing that really changed my my mind was all the interest in the 600 fuji
many people emailed/pm'd me to say that the are looking for one of these but they are available new they are extremely easy to find if you are really in need you pay for new it's this kind of....what is the word?...is there a word for it?...not hypocracy...but it's not the fault of these people...there is nothing inherently wrong with it....it just strikes me as very non-genuine...it's like people that only want something for a bargain don't deserve it because they are not willing to sacrifice for what they want. two months is a long time to think about things...

I asked him the very same question and his business place isn't set up for retail walk-ins. The goods are all boxed up and stored in the back. But he does have what he calls the "museum" where people can look at stuff. He has 2-3 items I'm interested in so I'm definitely going to stop in next time we go visit Laostyle17 in Chicago.

"Deserve" is a very strong word. I'm willing to bet a large reason the vast majority of us can even afford to be in this hobby at all is because we've acquired gear at "bargain" prices at one time or another -- yourself included.

It's interesting that there are so many suggestions to sell the gear to KEH.

Most certainly of all resellers, they are probably the most consistantly able and willing to buy. When they go to shows they don't offer up anything for sale they are only there to purchase.

One reason they are popular to buy from because they have some of the best prices available.
So, how is it that they are able to sell for such good prices? I'll wager it isn't because they offer the best prices when they buy gear.

I am not trying to imply that KEH is unfair in their purchase pricing. And, if I were trying to sell some gear quickly, I'd certainly consider them, but not if getting the best price was a primary consideration.

KEH acts like an old school NYSE specialist. The specialists are the people that make a market in a particular stock. They set the price that encourages the most buying and selling. They don't care if the price is high or low. KEH is probably closer to where the true used photography equipment market is as opposed to eprey. What I've noticed with eprey is that it has turned into a site full of exorbitant buy it now listings. That stuff NEVER sells. When a true auction does finally pop up on a nice item there is plenty of interest but invariably the item sells for a fraction of the prevailing buy it now price.

I personally use buy it now quite a bit but I set the prices at a reasonable level. I don't think I've had a listing last more than 48 hours without getting snapped up. Buy your equipment used at a reasonable price and you will be able to sell it quickly at a reasonable price.

The problem is people bought photographic equipment for $2000 years ago and won't face the fact that stuff is only worth $50 today.

What you are experiencing is what we call in America "free market capitalism."

Well it is obvious you never wanted to sell to begin with. Anything I own is up for sale... at the right price. You checked prices and realized the market was not at the point that would compel you to sell so you didn't sell. That's how a market works.

Just because you spend 10K in LF/ULF gear 20 years ago does not mean you can get your 10K back, or even 8K. Maybe if you're lucky $800-$1000. You realised this and decided its not worth selling. What did you really expect? Or you were not serious is selling in the first place.

This is not uncommon and can be quite difficult for some people to understand or able to psychologically deal with.

However if you have been buying film photography equipment for more than 10 years (and much less time in the digital photo equipment world), then it happens.

The way I look at it is that come the time I realize that I am not using the equipment and it is time to move it on (and likely use the money to buy something else of interest ), I consider the difference "rent" for owning and using the equipment.

I then just need to deal with the issue of whether I got good use and value for that "rent", and use that to help make good purchase decisions in the future... :confused:

Len, I'm with you. Some years ago I got tired of having a 500/5.6 cine camera lens collecting dust in the closet, reasoned that I'd be better off with it gone and whatever it brought spent on something more useful. So I sold it. The lens had been overhauled at vast expense by Century. I took a bad beating on it. But I was better off with cash in hand than with unused lens in closet.

I recently made some foolish purchases, am now selling lenses and odds and ends to reimburse my much too indulgent wife's household budget. I hope I'll at least break even but even if I don't I'll be better off with the new stuff than with the old. Keeping domestic peace doesn't hurt either.
