When I suspect someone of being a scammer I ask them to meet in person "So, you live in X-town. How convenient. I'll be there in two weeks time and we can meet and close the deal in person..." If they suddenly start making excuses for not meeting in person it is time to back off.
If you exchange pictures, ask for specific angles so they can't use other peoples pics.

audioman....... the saga...

What's even more fishy is Audioman hasn't logged into APUG since the 17.12.2012 acccording to his profile.

I've had two emails from him via APUG in response to two WTB posts and am awaiting photos. Lets see what happens.

Ian

Couple of days ago ago, I received two responses, via APUG, to two WTB ads I had posted last month in APUG. Audioman Offered to send pics. he was from Spain????

Yesterday, I received an email offering me a Speed 4x5 when what I wanted was a Speed lens board. Thought nothing of it until I just read this thread and the light went on in my head.

So if "Audioman" hasn't logged on since the above date, how did he know about about my two WTB ads posted in May, 2013?

Inquiring minds want to know!

One can read the classifieds without being logged in.

OK, I think we have a case of mistaken identity. "Audioman" is a legitimate user.

The scammer is "adioman" according to the e-mail I have from one of the users, who received an e-mail from "adioman" via the forum, and he's logged in as recently as June 5, 2013.

So Sean--If you've banned "audioman," he should be reinstated, and "adioman" should be banned.

I often visit the italian Pentax user forum (www.pentaxiani.it) and there's a feedback section there. You simply report what you bought from whom and that the transaction was ok... simple and funcional, and no stars or rating sys needed...

Thread stuck, but again, whether it works or not will depend on whether enough people participate, and for most occasional/infrequent sellers, buyers will have to rely on other information, like general forum reputation based on how long they've been around and how active they are on the forum.

Great thanks David and Summerbee.

Have at it folks, remember let's keep the below thread banter free and without drama so Sean, David and the other mods don't need to waste their valuable time. Give it a spin folks:

I just got an email from the guy. He sent me pictures for the wrong Kirk l-bracket. I found the original images on Gumtree. What a plonker. I told him where to go.

Yeah, same adioman guy sent me a message too! For Photoshop 2, not something everybody around here has lying in their closets. I ignored it because I had a hunch that it was fishy. Glad I got confirmation now, so my conscience can rest. Agree with Ghostman, what a plonker. But then, these jerks are just everywhere.

On the subject of bank transfers, they are not often used for private transactions in the UK, except perhaps with people you know well. One of the problems is that you need to divulge essential details about your bank account number, sort code etc, which are the very items of information that scammers are after to clean your account out (eg the folk in Nigeria etc). For that reason I've never accepted them on the various sites where I've sold items. Despite their faults, using people like PayPal, Google etc is safer.

It's totally normal in Switzerland to do bank transfers to move money to another person, I often pay for things this way. I also transfer money to UK accounts doing this but you no longer need to use account numbers & sort codes. All you need is the name & IBAN number for the person & off you go. It's really quite safe this way.

Thanks stevebarry for the heads up

I remembered this post when I read in the Melbourne Age, that about 300 people had been scammed on gumtree (an Australian craiglist) using this WTB scam. So thanks again.
