I had a really bad experience with this seller.

I was supposed to buy a complete Mamiya 7ii camera with 3 lenses and accessories from Bonn Macy (the seller). The camera was described as pristine and in "like new" condition.

The seller didn't want to use PayPal and suggested Zelle instead. Since zelle doesn't have buyer protection and this was a very expensive purchase, I told Bonn I would send him a partial payment first, and he would send one of the items, and I would pay for the remaining items after.

I sent him a partial payment of $1500 and he sent me one of the lenses (the agreed upon price of the lens was $1200). That was a mistake on my part - I was being overly cautious but assumed the seller was honest and that I would be buying the remaining items after receiving the lens.

The lens I received wasn't in the like new condition he described. The viewfinder spirit level had dried out, it was partially scratched as though someone tried removing the level, and the front glass of the viewfinder had a blemish on it. Besides looking like it had been cleaned with a wet sock, the lens itself was in very good condition; but before purchasing the rest of the items I asked Bonn for some close-up pictures of the camera body and remaining lenses to make sure there wouldn't be any more surprises.

Long story short, I had to pull teeth to get better pictures of the camera (which he never sent me) so I decided not to go through with the rest of the purchase. I contacted Bonn Macy 5-6 times to get back the additional $300 I had given him, but the seller hasn't replied to any of my emails or PMs (He's been active on the forums since)

I should have been more suspicious about him not wanting to use PayPal - if I had used paypal I could have opened a claim against him and gotten back those $300. Don't buy through zelle - there is no recourse.

I don't think I'll ever get my money back but I feel like I dodged a major bullet.

Buyer beware.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I can't seem to find the user, can you double check their username and PM it to me?

It's a real shame, unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of it about.

I've been buying used cameras for 30 years and this is the first time I had a problem. I've even bought cameras from Russian sellers sight unseen. There are some scammers on eBay, but I highly recommend buying from the Japanese sellers - almost all of them offer a 30-60 day money back guarantee, shipping is extremely quick and from my experience the Japanese sellers are extremely honest about the condition of their cameras.

My experience with eBay has been good. I only buy from sellers rated 100%.:Some sellers are unfamiliar with photo equipment and a couple have sent such things as leaky Jobo tanks or slide projectors with cracked condenser lens, but I always got refunds. Japanese sellers are a good bet.

Thanks for the heads up, that's good to know. I don't like the way the Japanese sellers rate their gear. It's often rated as Exc +, but then you read the fine print (literally) and you see things like fungus and stuff mentioned. That can't be, not w/ an Exc rating. Anything purchased from out of the country I limit to small stuff. I learned to do this after buying an expensive Leica lens from Canada that didn't match the description. Even though the seller eventually refunded my money, the shipping and customs fees were huge.

Here's where you should have stopped. Not even for a small purchase.

I'm sorry that this has happened to you and you're doing the correct thing by denouncing this scammer. Because not giving back the USD $300 is downright stealing.

Note there's an article in the NYT today, "Fraud Is Flourishing On Zelle."

Which makes it a little ironic that this is what my bank pushes...

Yes - that's him.
He's now listed as inactive and all his postings as far as I can see were items for sale. Unless there are other posts from him then Photrio's sole function for him seems to be as a sales outlet

I spotted someone who joined very recently as a subscriber who had a string of items listed for sale and had no other posts that I could see so I reported my concern.

Clearly Photrio is now seen as a cheap way for those whose interest is solely as sellers to join us. There appears to be no limitations such as so many posts on other subjects or a time before they can sell

Gone are the days when it was long term subscribers who generally could be trusted who were selling to fellow members

It is "caveat emptor" time here on Photrio and seems to have been that way for a few years, sadly.

BTW, fatso, I want to see you made whole as much as anyone else but this deal has been a mess from the beginning, seemingly without a complete meeting of the minds. It’s a real shame.

Photrio doesn’t take any legal responsibility for these private party sales or agreements through the classifieds, but we usually try to help out when we’re in a position to do so, and we’ve occasionally had to ban someone because of repeated problems in the classifieds, more often due to ineptness than dishonesty.

If you paid via a credit card account, you may have some protection.

Yes - originally I had no intention of outing the seller. I didn't voluntarily pay him extra for the lens. I paid $1500 as a first payment to make sure the seller was legit and limit my loss in case he was a scammer. My intention was to buy the rest of the items - so I wasn't too worried about him only sending the 43mm lens. Now that he disappeared - I can't even buy the camera and remaining lenses if I wanted to. The $300 was to be applied to the remaining balance - so it is theft.

Which is double ironic because the big banks own and created Zelle!
I am sorry to read this story, fatso. I would not think legal recourse is worth the $300 that was stolen. I have bought a ton of still and motion picture gear over the last 15 years from all over the world. Occasionally a deal has gone bad and I got beat, but if I average it over all the great transactions it has been negligible.
Thanks for letting everyone know about this person. Personally I would take it as a lesson learned, and stay away from less secure payment methods with people you don’t know well.
