So, I've been looking into getting some betterscanning holders to try and bring out the best in my (curly) 35mm on the V700. However, i'm not interested in wet mounting, just getting the film closer to the glass than it gets with the Epson provided holder. Is it possible to do so without wet-mounting, or does the under mounting feature only work when you are wet mounting? Frankly wet mounting sounds like a PITA, and you have to re-dry the film, but I've never done it before, so what do I know...

Or, should I just say to hell with it and try to get a dedicated 35mm scanner?

You can just use scotch magic tape and dry mount underneath. Works fine. I don't find much if any improvement going to the trouble of actually wet mounting.

The huge advantage is the ability to adjust film height to the exact plane of sharpest focus, to maximize what you can get out of the scanner.

That said, for convenience I have recently fallen in love with the Digitaliza holders you can buy for cheap on Lomography.com. You can shim them to get them to the height you need, but the big advantage is that while they don't hold as flat as the betterscanning mount, they are blazingly fast to load, and they do hold the film pretty flat without any need for tape.

But for the final, flattest scan, I'll mount in the betterscanning holder.
