So, I got the betterscanning holder. Excited, I loaded it up. I tried it at it's supposed 0.0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8mm height settings, to no avail. So I said, F*ck it, and put the neg directly on the glass, with the betterscanning ANR glass on top. Best sharpness i've ever seen.

!#!#%#@%$#@%

The betterscanning 0.0 setting is NOT 0.0, and constantly putting the glass directly on top is not a viable scanning option.

Is my scanner jacked up, or is this a normal problem?

I had my scanner looked at by an Epson guy, and he said there was no issues... Maybe he was a moron though.

I get better results with no holder at all! This is obviously an issue with curly film though, and as you can imagine creates flatness issues. I thought the scanner was supposed to focus 1mm above the glass, not directly on it!

Right on the glass makes it great for scanning 8x10 in no holder, but sucks for every other format if the film is curling. Yes, i've had 4x5 film curl.

Based on some of your other posts, it looks like you're using a V700. What film holder did you have identified in your scanning software? What scanning software?

With regards to the V700/V750, having the 8x10 film area guide specified means it will use the wide-area lens, which is designed to focus at the glass surface. The other, narrower-field lens, which supports 6400 DPI resolution, and is available when you specify any of the other film guides in software, expects the transparency to be at the 3mm nominal height. This of course varies somewhat among individual units.

As far as I can tell, the betterscaning holders are designed to operate at the nominal 3mm height (not on the glass surface). Make sure you have your settings correct in software, and keep in mind that you might need to turn the screws more than a full turn (greater than 0.8mm), to get the height you need with your scanner for optimal sharpness

Either your scanner is seriously out of specification or, as the previous poster noted, you most likely did not set the software correctly to "film with film holder" for the Epson software as noted in the instructional .pdf you were sent.
