Best radio flash trigger for Bronica SQ-A

Hi folks,

A while back I tried using a cheap hahnel radio trigger (designed for Nikon) on my Bronica, and I couldn't get it to work. I figured I'd try it, as it works on my Sony, so I figured it could work on anything with a hotshoe. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case.

So, what is a good radio trigger that would work on the Bronica?

I'd suggest to use a universal trigger with only one pin for the centre contact of the hot shoe, not a brand dedicated trigger. Does the hotshoe of your SQ-A have extra contacts beside the main centre one? You could try your current trigger but with the piece of blank film between the trigger and the Bronica hot shoe to cover up the extra contacts. I've had good experiences with the Yongnuo RF603 triggers on my Mamiya 645 Pro and 645AFD3. That said, my current Godox Xpro trigger for Canon also works on the AFD3 but just as a "dumb" trigger.

I have an SQ-A, and as it happens, I just bought a Yongnuo 622N transmitter (i.e. for Nikon) and two transceivers. I can confirm there is a problem trying to use the transmitter in the hot shoe of the speed grip of the SQ-A. It has to do with the extra pins being shorted out by the hotshoe. Also, the fit is extremely tight trying to get the transmitter into the hotshoe. I needed to use a knife to push the pins in on the transmitter because the edge of the hot shoe on the speed grip is not bevelled and the pins just hit it and stop on the way in. But using a PC cord into the transmitter instead of trying to put it in a shoe works fine.

Don't use a brand-specific hotshoe transmitter...use something that uses only the Center pin (trigger) plus side contact. Something like a Buff Cybersync, or something like this

I've had good luck with the Pocket Wizard PlusX. It's their "budget" radio trigger, but works well. Ten channels.

I have used the Pocket Wizard Plus II and Plus IIIs with the Bronica SQ-A, ETRS, and Mamiya RB67's with no issues. They are more expensive than other brands, but they always work.
