That is interesting. Except for one sole encounter all film-camera photographers I came across on street within the last 15 years and which I approached were most unfriendly and not into any kind of talk at all.

Sometimes people are trying to get into 'the-zone', 'the-flow', whatever so I get some people not wanting to engage. Occasionally though, we've just swapped socials and kept in touch for random meet ups or local advice (shows, labs, repairs, etc).

Walk around carrying a press camera such as a Pacemaker Speed Graphic and all sorts of people will come to talk to you about photography. I took one to an Armed Forces Airshow and more people took photographs of me with the camera than I took the whole day.

Wouldn't it be great if us Photrio members could have a get together bash? I wonder is our moderators would have to stay in their roles there? :D

I run a photography walk group on Facebook. It is based in London UK. It has over 800 members, but even then it is difficult to keep the interest going or get people to turn up for a meet.

I put a lot of effort into researching the route and history of the area, giving a guided tour pointing out points of historical interest and also good photo opportunities, so everybody goes home with some nice photos.

All this is free (see how much a professional guided walk in London costs) and still it is so difficult to get people to come along.

You could try starting a facebook or meetup group in your area and see how it goes.

You raised a really important topic.
This topic takes us back to the good old days.
That was the time when local photography clubs spread.
I do not deny the importance of virtual meetings on the Internet for photographers.
I'm almost sure that the photographers' meeting with each other is much more important than the virtual meetings.
So I always recommend setting up local photography clubs.
I have been trying to do this for three years in my country, Egypt, but with great regret, pragmatic thinking stands as a strong obstacle towards establishing that local club.
Engineer Rudy in Vienna they have a local photography club and they have a nice darkroom, and they meet and meet at least once a month, I'm really jealous of them.

My experience is that only non-photographers react on me. But they then give me thumbs-up.

Why does pragmatic thinking do that?

Why does pragmatic thinking do that?

You asked an important question, I tried a lot to find an answer for him for more than three years.
In fact, it is really sad, I feel embarrassed to answer.
But I have to disclose this briefing.
And I hope that the forum supervisors will allow me to do so, as it is considered a social talk and is somewhat far from the photographic talk.
It is briefly:
Egypt was divided vertically after the events of 2013 (and everyone knows what this date means) and we form two together or Sha'ban where the people were divided into two classes that have no third.
- The rich class of the ruling power of the ruling authority.
And the general class of the poor people, and they are often rejecting the ruling authority and consider it illegal authority.
Class is based on political affiliation.
The class is based on religious belief, as the rich class indirectly refuses to deal with the general class of the poor people because they are religious and because they are poor and because they are rejecting the ruling authority because the poor see it as an illegal authority and see that the wealthy class is benefiting from that power And they are the ones who reached the chair of government through the military coup.

The class has become the clear and dominant phenomenon in all fields, including the artistic field.
- It was not only limited to the absence of the people of the wealthy class to deal with the class of the poor or (religious). Rather, the development of the matter and reached the point of unannounced war and distorting any idea or an initiative by anyone, and the reason is that it does not belong to the wealthy class.
- Whenever I talk to any photographer or artist on Facebook, the first thing he asks me about is (where you live), he asks me about the title of my dwelling, and on this basis he can determine if I belong to the camp of the wealthy feudalism of the ruling authority or for the corresponding camp.
For example, if I announced a technical project or about an initiative to create a local photographic club, you immediately find a war on this invitation and distort it and submit accusations that I am just a person who wants to win through this project.
Al -Barajamati thinks that a person who belongs to the common people will inaugurate an artistic project, because he will win a good artistic and social reputation, and thus, what is indicated that he is one of the reformers and personalities that must be respected and appreciated.
This is what the people of the wealthy class do not agree with,
They don't want any poor person to do any good work at all.
In general, I do not want to send in explaining this complex file.

While I have been into photography for about 50 years and considered joining a group with like interests I haven’t found one that is compatible with my own goals. The local camera clubs are either into equipemtn and not pictures or pictures as competitive tools or something to be monetized. The former is like a car club I know where all the talk is about their horsepower and no one talks about driving anywhere.

By contrast, I joined an Urban Sketchers group where we have a meet up and do a drawing of some building or other subject in our community. All styles and abilities show up and everyone supports each other and there is no competition. Very little talk is about the type of paper or pen or watercolors anyone has chosen to bring. Finished work is shred online.

If I found a photography group with a similar attitude I’d join it.

I'm sorry that politics interferes in the enjoyment of Photography and art. Hopefully that will change in the future.
It's no longer just a political difference, it's more than this
We live under the modern Egyptian oligarchy.
Thank you for the interesting background. That helps understand your points of view.

I didn't want to reveal this miserable situation, but I was forced to answer that fellow's question in all honesty.
thanks for understanding

My goal was, and still is, to create a ((Cafe of Photographers)).
For where do meetings and meetings take place between photographers on the ground - as was the case in ancient times, when we had the (Egyptian Photographic Society), which was founded in the year 1946, and it was a “cafe” where photographers gather to exchange Opinions and face-to-face exchange of discussions, and that café was a starting point for acquiring knowledge and experience, selling, buying and exchanging tools and equipment, and so on.

It takes a particular personality to organize and sustain monthly meet-ups for any interest. Go for it if you think you got it.

While not much of joiner myself, 10 years ago next month I organized a vintage foreign car club here in Montana. We have about 50 on our mailing list and a core group of a dozen that show up at our twice a month meetings. We charge no dues, have no officers. I remain the organizer which means that twice a month I send out an email to remind people we are getting together. On occasion someone will organize a drive. We‘ve become pretty good friends and support each other in keeping these machines running.

I am not sure it has anything to do with my personality that has made it last as long as it has but think it’s the loose way it’s organized. We had a few show up who eventually left because they wanted it run like a business or military organization with ranks, name tags, matching jackets, etc. “Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!”

I found these.

Thank you for your interest, my friend.
You are really a good and decent man
You opened a serious and vital topic.

The first link: It is a training and education center for digital photography, through training courses for a high fee. It is a purely commercial project, it does not have any technical goals. I tried to contact them in order to include analog photography in their list of courses, but they did not care and did not respond to me.

The second link: non-profit non-profit associations, on which a group of foreigners residing on the land of Egypt is established.
In fact, these associations are surrounded by many suspicions. They are established on the land of Egypt in order to develop the visual culture and photographic arts in Egypt, and they depend on the funds of donations coming from Europe and other countries. The main objective of these associations is to seize the donation funds without providing any Real services to the Egyptian community of photographers.

- I have an interesting story in this matter, as I have previously dealt with one of the largest foreign institutions operating in Egypt, which is a cultural center interested in the arts of the image, run by a blonde European woman, and it was announced that it provides film development services to amateur photographers for a small fee, It became clear to me beyond any doubt that they are just a handful of mercenaries who came to Egypt to set up a fake civil association with the aim of seizing donation funds only.

- I do not make accusations without evidence, I have a lot of evidence and I have a bitter personal experience, and he was an eyewitness and partner with me in that experience (the respected Austrian engineer) Mr. Rodolfo. If you don't believe me, you can ask him for his opinion.

If you want to know about that bitter experience, I don't mind, but not in this thread. We may create a dedicated thread to discuss this, but I think you understand very well what I want to say in this context, you know, a lot of private charities are set up in developing countries. To serve the citizens of that country, and later it turns out that they were corrupt associations and their goal was to obtain money from donations, and they did not provide the people with only a few services.

The third link: It is similar to the professional association of photographers specialized in photographing weddings and parties with a digital camera (of course not photographers specialized in producing artistic images)

I'm sorry those links didn't work out. I suppose the only thing you can do is to meet film photographers on a one-on-one basis and develop personal relations with them so you have a few other interested photographers that you can have private photography meetings with. Then form a club with just these members.

Would it be appropriate in Egypt to put a personal ad in a newspaper or on social media asking for other interested hobby film photographers to meet up for a photoshoot?

Well, that's what I'm expecting when I arrive in Vancouver in late July!!

I know that Ph--, I mean APUG, used to have events in the past which I had never been able to attend, but I have no idea if and when such a large scale event would happen again.

meet film photographers on a one-on-one

Yes, this is what I have been doing for more than two years.
I meet photographers (especially young men) face-to-face in any way and talk to them, and sometimes I offer them a free film development service (if their economic conditions are bad) in order to help them. Then I give him (photochemistry) for free, as it would be very difficult for him to come to me whenever he wants to develop a roll.

I am struggling on all levels
