best hood for a Olympus 35RD

One thing i like about the olympus 35 RD is the use of standard 49mm filter thread.

One question though. What is the best hood to use on it?
Most hoods are cone shaped and interfere with the rangefinder. (one advantage to a large rangefinder like the Yashica Electro 35)

I use one like this on my 35RD. There are also similar ones with 52 mm filter thread on the other end. The hood will shadow a small part in the bottom right corner of the viewfinder but causes no problems. Just get a short one, longer hood will cause vignetting.

No, it seems to be even shorter than mine. It's difficult to tell from the photo. Mine is 24 mm, thread included.
Here's another one that looks like having a front thread in case you want to use a 52 mm snap-in lens cap instead of a 54 mm snap-on.

That hood is extremely rare. I've been looking for quite some time for that hood (genuine Olympus 35RD hood).

You can always make your own with step up rings or even a step up ring and small extension ring. Generic prices for those are pretty low and you end up with a metal hood.

A theoretical setup could be 49-52 then 52-55. or 49-52 + 52mm Extension ring. or 49-55+ 55mm extension ring.

Plus with the larger extension rings filters become more common, affordable, and easier to handle.

Good, that looks about the same size as the 49mm screw-in hoods I am looking at.
So I probably wont have any issues with them.

i use the original hood taken off from my M42 trioplan 100/2.8 - it is silver, a perpect match to my chrome 35 rd !

You should look for a Leica-style "ventilated" hood: that is, one with windows cut in it that the rangefinder can see through.

Maybe C/V made some as well...

The Olympus hoods for their rangefinders are cylindrical so they do not interfere with the viewfinder. They clamp onto the outside ot the lens to provide the extra diameter to not cut off any of the image. This also leaves the filter ring free for filters. I have always found lens hoods of any type to be a pain, and prefer to wear a ball cap. This can be used to shade the camera at times when the sun might be a problem
