best filters at night?

Okay, I know I "correct" the color cast in post but what filters should I consider when I am shooting long exposures of city buildings etc. at night? I usually shoot e100 or provia, sometimes velvia. I know it's impossible to get white lights everywhere with all the different types of lights in a city but how can you get the cleanest color balance in camera with long exposures at night?

The different colors of night lighting are what makes this type of photo interesting. I would use no filter (no filter factor). That's just my opinion. There's allot of guesswork when photographing night scenes anyway. Why complicate things.

But it's also fun to experiment just to see what you get..

Yeah, I am shooting that way now but sometimes when the exposure gets long the color will shift overall.

I prefer to correct in "post", but if I do use one, a star filter is very pretty. It is not really a filter, but often adds a nice effect to a night photo.
