The Nikon Coolscan V and Super Coolscan 5000 are film scanners capable of extracting all of the image quality present in 35mm negatives and slides. At under $1000 including film and slide adapters, the Coolscan V is truly an outstanding value. ...Really can't be matched. There is a misconception about installing and using these scanners on modern PC operating systems. Contrary to what may have been the case in the past, both scanners now can easily be installed on any laptop or desktop PC under any 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Windows including Windows 10, and can be operated with Nikon Scan 4, VueScan, or SilverFast software. My personal preference is Nikon Scan 4. Check eBay for newly serviced units.

I agree that the Coolscan V is most likely the best value for 35mm but only from the perspective of owning the Coolscan 5000 & 9000.
That it can extract all the image quality captured on a frame of 35mm will depend on the film, equipment used and care taken in the frame. There are films that exceed 4000dpi when used properly.

Love mine. I initially bought Minolta...it was nfg so I returned it to Amazon, who immediately replaced it with no grief...but that one was also nfg. Amazon contacted me, told me most of the Minoltas were nfg and Amazon was through with them...and would I accept Nikon V. I said good, they sent and I've enjoyed many years of flawless performance from it.

Minolta died from bad quality control.
