In a few weeks I'll be going on a four day hike as part of a UK Coast to Coast walk. My trusty 'blad will be in my daypack, but I will also be bringing the other type of camera for record shots, video etc. I would like to have the "other" camera readily available, without having to stop, open my backpack etc. I realise that I should be looking for some kind of strap/harness combo, so I can have the camera readily available for snaps. Which harness/strap would you recommend?

Just to try to explain a bit more, I'm looking for some kind of over the shoulder strap, which connects to a belt loop or whatever.

Is this thing on? Check...two... I'll be having a look in a camera store today, so I will report back if anybody's interested.

Well, I ended up buying an Op/Tech stabilizer strap, which basically goes around your waist. The camera hangs down on its own strap.

I have the Op/Tech stabilizer as well, which I've used for several backpacking trips. I wanted something that would keep the camera steady against my chest/stomach, especially when boulder-hopping or crossing streams, but let me use the camera quickly as needed (in case I run across Bigfoot). I modified mine a bit so that it attaches to the backpack straps as they come over my shoulders and back down to the waist. That way I don't have to wrap it around my body. I've mostly used it with a Bronica RF645, which is about the size and weight of a large 35mm SLR.

Hi jimjm, thanks for your reply. It looks like it should be perfect for my needs. I might even end up modifying it as you did.

This looks like a good idea and does what I'd like it to do. That said, I'd be using it for a folder or TLR, so the design may not work great. Also, it'd be great to keep it around my side. Any other nifty straps out there that may help?

The brand I was going to look at was Black Rapid, a fairly new brand. They make a few different straps which go diagonally across the body. That's what I thought I wanted but once I saw the simplicity and practicality of the Op/Tech stabiliser I was happy to go with that.

On longer hikes with backpack I use a thing called Capture Pro Clip by Peak Design - you can carry your camera carry on the backpack strap, your belt or a bag. I used it with my FUJI GA645 and a F2 - works nice.
I prefer fixing the clip on my backpack strap - tried it on my belt but I lost my trousers ...
My ETRSi or even the GW670iii is a little to heavy. https://www.peakdesign.com/product/clips/capturepro/

Remember a lens hood to keep rain off lens and bring fast film. Its horrible here. It looks maybe 5.6 1/125th with fp4+ at best - and flat grey skies. If weather doesnt improve you will find it a tough challenge to get shots!
