what is special about this and are two worth $80? Beseler model 45

confoosed

We are confoosed. Do you mean the Model 45 motorized film enlarger which I just saw for sale for $1,800 on the Internet? Yes, two of those are worth the chump change you mentioned. Perhaps you should elucidate further.

Assuming reasonable condition, yes. Well built, versatile, capability of professional results, long lasting, adaptable, flexible, interchangeable parts, such as lens mounted on lens board will fit the 45, 23, CB7. Probably forgot many points.

it has a timer as well?

This is a little like asking if a Chevrolet is a good car.

There are numerous versions of the Beseler 45 enlargers, and a vast number of accessories have been made for them. They have been made for a long time.

In general, they are worthy of serious consideration, if they are in good shape and include a good selection of useful accessories.

No timer built in, but there often are timers available when people are selling darkroom equipment.

Yes... If 80 dollars is a price you can afford, you will have solid equipment for the money. Get them both if you have room for it. With two, you can do combination printing (like Jerry Uelsmann) or at least have one setup for 35mm and the other setup for 4x5 at the same time. Looks like it has a basic condenser lamp head. If you don't get negative carriers, that's not a big problem there are many available. You can put better lamp heads on them later if you want, but the design allows you to use the basic lamphead with all film sizes from 35mm to 4x5 by adjusting the distance from lamp to negative (independently of the distance from negative to lens). A good design feature.

I am going to try as soon as possible! I want to learn this and everything film eventually! Thanks everyone!

It looks like it has a timer on the baseboard

Beselers are heavy and large, and some people love em. If you don't have an enlarger, by all means get one or both. But since they are large, if you have limited space you may want to just get one. Even one is probably worth $80. That's about what I paid for my 45MXII 10 years ago. I have printed color on the condensor head using acetate filters, but I now use my Omega enlarger with color head most of the time.

I do have ample room, however, I don't know the first thing about these, or its use, yet! If they are still available, I may get them both ASAP! One is mentioned as smaller, but, I really have no clue what that means in terms of comparison! I'm thinking refrigerator sized! xD

That Time-O-Light timer has been well used!

It isn't particularly valuable, but the enlarger frame and light source has potential.

You will need a few things with it though.

Here is a listing for a new one, and the specifications show the sizes: Dead Link Removed

Don't get too excited by the price - all new enlargers cost way more than most used ones.

The reference to another, smaller one might actually refer to something smaller in format - like a Beseler 23C series enlarger.

Believe me I can't allow over excitement, since I fear it may have been already swooped on by others with better know;edge than mine own! The ad mentions that it is an elder model, so, who knows?! seriously, who knows, because I sure don't! :D

Buy both and keep one for parts.

You mention that one is smaller - I don't remember different sizes. Possible the other is a 23c.

If the other one is a 23C I don't think it will help with parts for the 45M. But if the other one is a 23C, that's probably all you need for medium format and its a somewhat smaller, lighter unit. The 45, in case you didn't know, is built to handle 4x5 but will handle everything smaller too. And if you don't get either of these don't fret; depending on where you live used enlargers are not hard to come by and they often are close to free. At least in the US. Someone was giving away a 45 near me recently.

I have a Beseler 45MX and a 23C. I'm 950 miles away from them, but I'm fairly sure that the height difference isn't that much when they're sitting on the bench. But the 45MX can do 16x20 + while the 23C needs to project onto a wall to do that big. As big as the 45MX is, with the vertical section detached from the baseboard, the whole thing will fit in the back of an '06 Mustang (with the back seats flopped down).
If it's been treated well, it's definitely worth that or more. Even if you have to do some fixing, there are lots of parts out there. Very solid enlarger. And the 23C is very good, too, if that's what the other one is.

If you do get it, Remove the condenser unit & lamp housing before you move it. It'll be a lot easier to handle.
That's everything from the silver ring up in the picture.
