Hello......I have recently acquired the dichro computer controlled color head with the data module. I have done searches on APUG, (perhaps someone can give me search tips too)......and have not found operating help.

The head seems to work fine, but I am having some difficulty figuring out the data module and how to use it!!

If anyone has a link to an instruction manual, or can give some tips on basic operation, it would be great. The head also has some sort of probe, that is attached to a metal clamp.....I am not doing color, just BW.....

Thanks as always.

I have not seen this particular thing, but I do print colour, so here are my thoughts:

The computer control head will have a probe to sense the intensity, and colour of the projected light.
It will likley measure all three channels of light at once, and since you say computer controlled, it will likely try to adjust the dichroic filters on its own, or you may perhaps have to move the filter settings until some indicator(s) on the computer extinguish. It will likely have the ability to be set to measure for printing negatives, versus printing from slides (ie positives)

It will likely integrate the light to figure overall how bright it is, and likely will automatically adjust the time that the enlarger light is on to allow constant exposures to be maintained despite filter adjustments, or aperture adjustments, or different enlarger head heights, or different negative densities.

There will likely be the ability to program a number of different 'channels' to allow the probe to be set up, for instance, to give a zero reading on the highlight of caucasian skin, if that is what you calibrate it for. The most useful setting, I find is a netral grey channel, for all sorts of things can be analysed relative to NG, like white clouds, and black asphalt (different exposure, usually same colour tone though.) Programming the probe channels the first time is not always an easy task, but once you have it, it is smoother sailing from there in.

There may also be 'master' channels, to let you adapt the basic filter settings for changes in the film that is being used, or more usefully, the different characteristics of different lots of colour printing paper.

There may also be sub-channels that can be factored in to compensate for recipricity failure (paper non-linearity) for longer exposure times.

Search for information on Lici Colorstar analyser to get a good idea of how a colour analyser works, and you will gain insights in how your unit is likely to work.

Nick Zentena used to have a scan of a manual for one on his web site, but I am not sure if he still maintaines a site since he retired to italy.
