Does anyone know what this red area on the enlarger height scale means? I have the manual and it's not mentioned. Any ideas?

This is a index mark for horizontal projection. The pointer needs to be at or below the red mark to insure that the condenser lamp house will clear when positioned.

The 23CII Owner’s Manual says the same thing without referring to the red band on the column.

On page 4 you can read instructions for pivoting the projection assembly.

“J. Oversize Prints

1.
. . . Make sure the pointer arrow on the carriage is set to #9 on the Elevation Scale to ensure clearance between the lamphouse and frame. . .”

You can see the carriage height indicator positioned centered over the red band in the photo of Figure 2 (forward of the elevation crank). Unfortunately, the red band isn’t mentioned.

I checked the 23CIII manual. The wording is the same. The red band is not referenced. Nor is there a photo of the area as is given in the 23CII manual.
